Wait for Interview or Send in Additional Rec?

So, I submitted my Duke Supplement Nov. 11 in order to qualify for an RD Alumni Interview. And I’ve waited…and waited…and waited…and I haven’t heard anything. My friend just told me today that she has her Duke interview this week. And she submitted long after the Dec. 10 deadline. We go to a boarding school, so we live in the same area, and therefore should have the same contact person…correct?

Somewhere on the Duke website, it said to wait until Jan. 20 before contacting my Alumni Representative about an interview. But on my confirmation email it said that if I don’t get contacted for an interview by the end of January, then to send in an additional recommendation by Feb. 9 in place of an interview.

Should I wait or just go ahead and send in my additional recommendation? If I had to do the recommendation, I was going to ask my employer. But I know I’ll have to ask him waaaayyy in advance because he’s a SUPER busy man. And I don’t want to wait until the last minute for him to draft something up.

I would go ahead and ask your employer to send in a recommendation now. Even if you do end up receiving an interview, it won’t hurt to have both an interview and a recommendation.

There are many interviewers in a given area and chances are you will not have the same interviewer. There is a single chairperson for the area that assigns you to a particular alumnus, but then it is up to the individual alumnus to contact you. Alumni have busy lives and sometimes don’t get in touch with you immediately. But, don’t fret, you have until mid-February to get the interview done. So, it’s possible you’ve already been assigned to somebody but he/she simply hasn’t had the time to contact you yet or that you will be assigned to somebody in the near future as interviews are completed and the chairperson assigns more applicants. Having an additional recommendation certainly won’t hurt you, though, assuming it’s positive and consistent with the rest of your application.

There is a request form online, at least there was for EDers, and I suggest you fill it out. The interview really is invaluable and I would highly recommend going to great lengths to secure one.
