Waitlist Discussion- Fall 2020 Virginia Tech

I’m not sure it’s reasonable to expect a university to start filling out a wait list before they have received all matriculations from accepted students. Wouldn’t the only way to shorten the span be to reduce the time between last wave (RD) offers and matriculation deadline? Then you would have a whole different group of parents/students up in arms saying that the school isn’t allowing enough time for them to make up their minds. It’s a “6 of” situation, and the unfortunate reality with any university is that if they have to choose between groups of students to aggravate, it will be wait listed kids 100% of the time.

My S just committed elsewhere. Very happy that this part is in the bag. Congrats to all for all the work done to get to this spot, Enjoy - Be Well

@aintsayingish Congrats for having it settled! Mine chose elsewhere over VT as well (not because he didn’t love VT, his older brother is a Hokie; but it came down to location). Now you don’t have to worry about losing any deposits

Yeah it sucks to have to forfeit a deposit (I would know I have 6 waitlists I’m waiting for), but most schools use waitlists to make up for a lower yield than expected. Can’t expect them to give all the waitlist offers before May 1, because they won’t know exactly how much space they have.

Has anyone in-state gotten off the waitlist recently?

I have not noticed any here yet.

No in state student has posted about getting off the waitlist. Out of state students only.

Anxious mom of an waitlisted in state son here. I wonder if they’ll start pulling on May 2 (Saturday) or wait until Monday? I imagine they’ll stagger the numbers they pull so many will not get off in the first round.

@Craystonemom Anxious here too! I’m guessing it won’t be until next week, but still hopeful for sooner.

I think pulls may start immediately. I don’t think there’s going to be a staggered approach in practice, but the results announcements may appear that way (if that makes sense). For example, if there are 35 available spots for ET majors I don’t think they are going to offer to 15 Saturday, then another 15 Tuesday, then 5 on Friday. Rather, I believe they will offer to 35 in one wave, then if a handful decline the offer then they will go back to the pool for add’l pulls. So Kid 1 may hear Saturday and accept right away, Kid 2 hears Saturday and declines at tail end of deadline (let’s say 72 hours) so Kid 3 doesn’t hear until Tuesday because they are next up for the spot Kid 2 declined.

Any idea on approximately how many in-state pulls would be made?

We are in state as well and haven’t heard anything. We are trying to map out our Plan B as it seems like there are a lot of in state kids on the waitlist.

They say the waitlist is unranked, but for some reason, I highly doubt that is the case; based on the people who were accepted OOS off the list that I know or who are in this thread, which I know is an extremely small sample size.

Not sure about that but I sent a LOCI just in case to show them that I really wish to attend.

@wbwest Plan B already has a deposit down, which we’ll lose the minute DS (hopefully) gets pulled. There will be no lag time in his decision making. He won’t be able to hit that accept button quick enough.

@drewh02 - You seem like a high achiever to me with your stat. Are you still expecting to get off waitlist and possibly enroll VT? What is your Plan B if you don’t mind I ask? Wish you the best to come.

We’re all pulling for @drewh02 !!!

I agree- pulling for you too, @drewh02!

Thank you all! My Plan B currently is Clemson Engineering, which I’ve already deposited, but I am still on the waitlist for both Tech and UVA.

Is Psychology a competitive major at Tech?
