for a school ive been waitlisted from, I’ve gotten the suggestion to send mt ao a thank you note. I can’t find their info online so should call and ask? I really want to get in here, its my top option
I wouldn’t recommend sending a thank you note. What would you be thanking them for, the waitlist? That doesn’t seem authentic.
Send a LOCI and/or anything else the school accepts. Send materials the way they instruct…whether thru the portal, to an email address, whatever.
Make sure you deposit at a school that did accept you by May 1. Good luck.
Love the school that loves you back. And considering that you got into Cornell and Berkeley, you have strong options.
Accept the WL as a soft rejection. There is zero you can do to improve your odds once you send a LOCI. The school will choose who it needs to fill its institutional priorities. It could be you, but odds are it’s not
Thanks for rejecting me? That’s what a thank you note would say because that’s what happened.
hmmmm no - do as @Mwfan1921 says - determine what they accept - some have a form, some allow you to update if you have new info and some say do nothing.
If you have a regional rep, it won’t hurt to write - I’m hopeful to attend and I filled out the form as requested on line - so they know. It’s not necessary and overkill - but if it makes you feel good.
I don’t know the school (do you want to share) - but know that a WL has said you were not accepted (I say rejected but people don’t like that). However, they are using you as a hedge in case their yield falls short. Some schools - like Michigan as an example - WL a quarter of applicants, far ore than they admit. Some privates do too.
Yes, at some, some get off. Occasionally many get off.
But you need to put your focus on the rest of the list. There are many schools out there where you can have a wonderful experience and success and not just the one you think is tops.
Good luck.
Echoing what others have said. Send a LOCI and then find a school that you love in the accepted pile.
The waitlist is even more idiosyncratic than the college selection process. You have no idea what the AOs need to ‘round out the class’
My daughter has four waitlist colleges that she really likes, one of which is her favorite from her entire list. So I truly sympathize -but we are acting like none of them will make an offer -which is the most likely outcome for everyone -even a top student like yourself.
Your waitlist college has a process for indicating you want to remain on that waitlist. Do only what they ask you to do. Some colleges are very clear that they want no LOCI, and the only info they will look at is something new and worthwhile that happened since the application was sent.
No admissions department wants extraneous “stuff” sent to them (this would include a thank you note).
Agree with the others. Once the LOCI (if the college even accepts one) is submitted there is nothing left to do.
You said you have been admitted to UCB and Cornell. What a fabulous outcome – congrats. Put that “dream school” in your rear view mirror and look forward to having a wonderful experience at Berkeley.
Agreed . If they accept a letter of continued interest you have an opportunity in there to include any additional honors, awards, successes, etc., that you have had since your application was submitted. Sounds like you have two excellent opportunities (Cal and Cornell) one of which you should accept and enroll, but there is absolutely no harm in staying on a waitlist. Whether or not students are admitted from the waitlist varies from year to year. It’s like being on a wedding list “B” list. There isn’t room for you right now, but if others decline the “invitation”, things may open up for you and you may get an offer down the road. Please, please do not consider it a “rejection”- that’s simply not true. You are obviously good enough in the school’s eyes to be accepted for admission. There just isn’t enough room at this time. There may never be room or there may be room for other students, but not you, but right now there is no room at the inn, as they say.
hi yes i also have 5 different waitlist offers total to top schools so i was thinking i could get off at least 1 of them?
In what universe are Cornell and Berkeley not top schools?
Send in your LOCIs but then take a moment to appreciate and enjoy the amazing success you have already achieved in the college admission process.
Please prepare yourself that you won’t get off a waitlist. You just have no idea if you will fulfill an institutional priority if and when admissions goes to the waitlist apps.
Get excited about the school you are going to put down your deposit at. Get a roommate, register for classes, etc. Good luck.
got it yea. i dont really understand the waitlist process so i thought that so many waitlists would mena at least 1 place would accept me but i see that that may not be the case.
That would be a terrible assumption. Best to mentally move forward and focus on your acceptances. If a waitlist comes through down the road, consider it a happy surprise.
yes will do. i really hope it will but the chances for all the waitlists are 4-5% accetance rate only so make ssense
Mathematics and statistics don’t apply to waitlists - at least not as far as predictions. You may get off one or more. Or you may not. My guess if they’re more selective than Cornell or UCB, you won’t; most of those schools take low double digits from a waitlist of 1000+ names. You need to plan accordingly and accept an offer and adjust your mindset. If you get off a waitlist, then you’ll have a pleasant surprise
got it. most of them are very selective like barnard i got and rice and uchicago. so im trying but ik uchicago is really hard. im really thinking/hoping to attend cornell but i feel like getting off the other waitlists are really hard.
It sounds like you already got accepted to Cornell…is that correct? If so…and you are hoping to go there…commit to Cornell!
They may (one place accept you) but realize they haven’t. In fact, all five rejected you. They said no.
They are concerned about themselves so they (depending on the school) give an enormous amount of kids false hope in order to protect themselves.
But let’s say they expect 500 to enroll and only 480 do, now they have to find 20. But it might take them offering 200 to find 20 to say yes. What you don’t know - do they rank the list? Is there no aid for those or do they look at family financials to find wealthy kids ? Is it major dependent? State from dependent or something else ?
But the truth is they’d said no. They’ve done you no favor. But if they fall short they may call on you to do a favor for them.
Maybe you get off one, three or five but you shouldn’t count on it. If you do, it means they fell short and all of a sudden they’ll reconsider some of those they rejected..
So move forth for now, get a roomie and fall in love so that if they do come back to you, you can tell them - thanks but no thanks I found a place that excites me.
Good luck.
oh ok. i am kinda confused tho, because for most of these schools they say the waitlist means that they want to accept me but in the initial class they dont have space, so they want to revisit it later. like a “maybe”. or is it really a soft rejection?
