Waitlist Info and Tone

From my experience, sometimes admissions officers can sound hesitant when it comes to the waitlist. Sometimes, they’re vague and try not to give much info (maybe, because of the uncertainty).

Are there any reasons for a college admissions officers to sound hesitant when they talk to waitlisted students?

I have experience with this (ironically, both from colleges with open curriculums).

If you think about it, they have to be diplomatic since they don’t have answers to give to you. They would like you to have continued interest but they don’t have anything yet to offer you. They don’t want to give you an unrealistic picture either.

How else would conduct themselves? If you were in their shoes…

I’ve been there. Students are calling and telling you how desperately they want to be at the school. While you don’t want to tell them there’s no chance because there is a small chance, you know odds are long. They are human.

There are three outcomes:

They can tell someone the truth (as they see it) and be right.
They can tell someone the truth (as they see it) and be wrong on the low side.
They can tell someone the truth (as they see it) and be wrong on the high side.

With two out of three outcomes not helpful, what would you do in their position? I would not want to be in their position, sort of like being the guard to someone on death row. Can’t be fun.
