Waitlist Question

I was waitlisted, but I already have a few other very good choices to choose from, so I want to decline the offer to remain on the waitlist.

Yet, when I tried doing so, it asks me which school I plan on attending next year, and there is no undecided option. Why are they asking? Does it really matter?

Why don’t you just decline once you know where you are actually going?

It sounds like it doesn’t really matter, so why not just pick the one you’re leaning toward the most right now?

^^Because I really have no interest in remaining on the waitlist. I mean, don’t get me wrong, Hopkins is a great school, and I’m thankful not to be rejected. But, hopefully if I decline early on, then maybe they’ll move through the waitlist faster and get to the people who actually really really want to go sooner. Well, theoretically that will happen, I don’t really know how it works. :)

I won’t take a spot on the waitinglist either. Johns Hopkins shattered my dream of being a doctor. Now I am going to be a physicist. I don’t even know should I sigh or cheer?

mermaid, I meant just pick whatever school you’re leaning toward the most right now so that you could decline faster. I agree, no reason to take a spot if you know you don’t want it.

I’m pretty sure that question is only for statistical purposes. You’ll probably get an email from every school you got accepted to after the reply deadline asking where you decided to go and a whole bunch of questions comparing the schools you got accepted to.

Do it mermaid! Pick a random school and mess with the statistics! muahahahaha

They want to know where you’re going to go so they can see to where they are losing potential students. When you deny acceptance to certain colleges, they also ask that same question.

@mermaid, I see what you’re saying, but don’t they go through the waitlist after the May 1 deadline? So it wouldn’t really matter WHEN you denied your spot. I mean, I’m in the same situation as you right now, but I’m not going to give up my spot until I’m 100% sure that I know where I’m going.

^Oh really? oops. I already declined the offer.

Oh well, I really had no intention of going to JHU, and I have lots of other good schools to choose from right now.

And thecatwhoswims, that’s what I did, I picked the one I’m currently leaning most towards. :)

Haha, it would have been funny to mess with them. Maybe I should have put Harvard? or my local community college? haha. Harvard would be especially funny considering decisions aren’t out yet.

You should’ve put JHU haha.

it was actually a drop down menu, so I don’t think JHU was a choice, lol. but that would have been awesome.

Ah damn. Well it would’ve been awesome if they let you.

So where are you deciding between right now?

Already declined my offer to remain on the WL. :)

Catwhoswims, I’m deciding between Duke, Chicago, and WashU mainly. Most likely going with Duke. at least, that’s what I told JHU just now. :)

well, I guess if the finances don’t work out, I’ll go to my state school. But I’m hoping!

Ah nice choices! Those are three that I actually applied to (though I didn’t make it into duke). I know you already dropped JHU, but mind telling me why you like chicago more? I’m trying to pick between the two of them at the moment.

And don’t worry Im sure everything will work out financially.

Ah chicago…
I’m not sure what type of person you are, but if you are out for a pure liberal arts education, chicago is amazing. When I visited I found the atmosphere really intellectual, but be warned its students are worked to death (especially by the rather harsh grading curve and the quarter system which means everything is really fast paced). Chicago is really quirky and somewhat nerdy…and people for the most part aren’t afraid to show it. Have you heard of its scavenger hunt? Some of the things on the list are really Chicago-esque, like a fully assembled nuclear detonation device (or something like that). It’s not a school for everyone, but I really liked it. The classes I sat in on were unbelievable. They were small, discussion based, and the teacher would go to the front and basically challenge all the students to argue with her, socratic style. Also, have you looked at the Chicago core? It should give you an idea of what the school is like.

That said, I think I’m picking duke over chicago because Chicago is kind of…depressing for lack of a better word. The weather gets awful (one of its unofficial mottos is “come for the weather stay for the sex”), and the students are so overworked. Plus, I want to go pre-med and the harsh grading curve makes it hard to maintain a good GPA. I read somewhere that chicago actually has kind of bad placement into med schools. So, I guess if I weren’t going to go premed (GPA is super important for med school) then I’d pick Chicago.

I could go on forever about chicago, but I probably shouldn’t on the JHU board, so feel free to pm if you want to discuss it more! : )

^ That’s my top choice right now, but is it really so bad for pre-meds? :(
