Waitlist Stats 2023

I’m assuming people on this forum have seen this, but I found it interesting and thought I’d post it just in case. Below is a link to the waitlist statistics from 2023 admissions. I know they fluctuate (some drastically) each year, but it can give you an estimate/odds in case you are waitlisted this year:

LOVE THIS! Thank you! I know the info is on CDS, but it is eyeopening and interesting to see it all in an easy to view chart.

Ouch these are brutal.

But things may be different this year, I’m wondering if Fafsa delay will mean more kids across all schools get waitlisted while it all shakes out. And then more eventually accepted off the waitlist in May/june. And the FAFSA Delay may also favor full pay kids, at least at the need-aware private schools…

True, but 2022 was a particularly bad year for waitlist movement because there was over enrollment at many schools the prior year so they were filling less seats.

To be noted: many schools that are need blind in admissions may not be need blind for the waitlist.

Yea, we do not qualify for any financial aid. I wonder that too. The FAFSA delay is going to push everything back. :frowning:

@DadOfJerseyGirl I hope so! This list was last updated in Nov 2023 but it would be great if the 2022-23 stats were stricter than this year!

You’re welcome

Yes will be strange this year. We aren’t eligible for aid, and I know several of my Ds schools are need aware (Syracuse, I think Michigan). EOD it might help us, but I’m not comfortable with it potentially punishing kids that need aid.

I wonder…is the number of students listed as “Admitted from Waitlist” actually the number who were offered admission from the waitlist, or the number from the waitlist who accepted an offer and enrolled.

Thank you. 51,350 students on the waitlist at UCSD. That is just…wow.

Same here.

I know, right! I had no idea waitlists could go this long.

Something doesnt sound right - UCSD freshmen enrollment itself is around 8000 how come 51350 offered spots on waitlist?

The waitlist numbers were confirmed by the UC Counselor conference and CDS. UCSD also did something different with the waitlist for 22-23 admits by waitlisting many students, then creating a short list where many students were denied early on and others were kept on the waitlist longer to fill in spots.

2023 numbers from the UC Counselor conference are:
19,372 Waitlisted
1151 Admitted.

Thanks - this seems more reasonable than 50K waitlist - so College Transition numbers may still be off.

The 51,350 waitlisted applicants was for Fall 2022 so correct. The CDS for 2023-24 not yet posted. The numbers I listed are from the UC Counselor conference data.

The College transitions numbers are for Fall 2022 not Fall 2023 at least for the UC’s.

Something is truly wrong. Why Rhodes will waitlist over 1k students if total number of students in school is 2k? That is waitlist to fill 2 years from scratch…

Many schools have huge waitlists that don’t make any sense. These are likely the result of providing far too many “soft rejections”, although schools like to say it gives them optionality on who to pick to fill any remaining spots.

Ok thanks. That is,at least, reasonable.
