Waitlisted at 5 UC’s and one CSU denial

This weekend is Cal Day and I know they always make a big to-do about students committing that day. They even have special swag bags and photos for students who commit. I wonder how many takers they’ll get this year given all the uncertainty.

This weekend is admitted student day for the majority of colleges in California. I’m sure all schools are going to be impacted.

UC Davis held Aggie Day last weekend. A large number of people (on CC as well as in the FB group) committed. I assume most, if not all, are full pay.

Won’t even consider attending Bobcat Day (UCM) on April 20? Does it hurt?

Seconding the ASU suggestion. Here’s the link to their scholarship estimator https://scholarships.asu.edu/estimator

They’re very quick to respond at this time of year, and they’re full of California students. Their advising is laser focused on getting kids out in 4 years.

I’ll send you and your daughter good thoughts for the UC waitlists. As you can see from your own experience, most kids apply to a BUNCH of UCs but of course can choose only one.

Thank you for this information. I will definitely be checking it out

I think she’ll be admitted from at least one WL.

Came here to say this. Kids are guaranteed a spot at a UC or CSU. Period. UCR and UCM have a lot to offer. CSULB in my hometown is amazing! I really wish kids wouldn’t overlook these.

Do you know if they offer as much merit aid as UofA?

Students are not guaranteed a spot in a UC or CSU. UCM and many CSUs are almost guaranteed because of their selectivity but there are no guarantees.

Here is their merit aid calculator.

And I’ve heard lots of great things about Barett!

And have you run the Net Price Calculators at her acceptances? Each school is different, so one may end up having a financial gap that your daughter could fill by working this summer and over some of her breaks. Not that she wants to be a fast-food worker this summer, but California has mandated a minim $20 hour minimum wage for fast food workers. If she got full time work for 15 weeks this summer, that’s 12k that could go towards UW for instance.

And some winter breaks are almost a month long…another opportunity to help bridge the gap. And working up to 10 hours a week during the school year is usually considered quite do-able.

Some CSUs do have guaranteed admission for any student in the service area if they meet the minimum GPA requirement.

I tried running that but it gave me an award with the condition of attending Lake Havasu

Since she is high stats, is she also a national merit finalist? I know that’s super-hard to achieve in california, due to the very high selection index.

They can be and often are both. Often at the same time. Recognizing the richness of options in the UC/CSU system does not mean that issues do not exist. Pretending otherwise helps nobody.

For Political Science, would there be any interest in Sac State? It is a nice campus and does not have the Greek life vibe. There is good access to state government internships/opportunities. One of the most successful people I know in California politics is a Sac State grad. I believe Sac State is accepting applications until May 1st.

So I put my (California) kid’s info in and saw multiple awards for different campuses. Did you only see lake Havasu? Tempe/ downtown phoenix was listed higher in the list.

I think ASU is guaranteed admission and merit , so might be nice to consider.

If she would really attend (perhaps based on which campus) and if you can afford the campus she wants, then i strongly urge having her write to the email posted above to ask about applying to Barrett. If she applies to and gets accepted to Barrett, and if there is a merit award for that campus that you can afford, then she can commit there. If she still wants a UC, she can stay on their waitlists and if one comes through, withdraw from ASU and commit to the UC. You may lose your deposit though.

And…is she national merit?

Edited to say, you would need to confirm with financial aid that their merit award for Tempe / Downtowm Phoenix would be good for Tempe (Barrett) at this point in time.

Also, best to check which campuses host Barrett. I am assuming just Tempe but best to confirm.

That’s strange. She was highest choice possible on all drop down menus. Other variables are class size and rank… shes top 5 in her class, which has about 150 students.
Did not input SAT/ACT as she did not take them

Edited: when I remove “national scholar” checkmark, it gives me other award options, including Tempe. Intersting

I have also heard that there is a good chance of this happening.

Unfortunately the UCs are in a bind because they can’t release FA packages without FAFSA info (that they still do not have). And they can’t expect students to commit without FA packages…

The delayed FA packages and delayed SIR date would be expected to naturally delay offers of admission for waitlisted students, as they must wait to see who commits. However it’s possible we may also see increased waitlist movement this year, because of admitted students going ahead and choosing alternatives to the UCs instead of waiting for FA packages.

What exactly are the issues?

Are the “issues” that high-stats kids don’t always get into the top 6 UCs? Because I really don’t think that is a problem that needs to or can be solved. High-stats kids often don’t get into a lot of top 20 schools. It seems the only difference is the expectation that getting into a top UC should be guaranteed because it is a state school.

Is the issue that some out-of-state kids are admitted? The average percentage of out-of-state students in the UC system is 16.3%. And they pay an extra $32,000 a year for the priviledge.

The top 20 schools are basically a lottery even for high stats kids. So if they don’t get in at UCB or UCLA, it should be seen as just as “problematic” as if they don’t get into Notre Dame or NYU.
