Waitlisted at 5 UC’s and one CSU denial

OP—are things looking up for you?

Right there with you. My wife and I have twins, and while one got into UCSB and one into UCSC, we were truly shocked at how many WL’s they got (Davis, SD, LA, SB) given their stats and strong EC’s. Now with the FAFSA debacle and delayed commit dates, just completely up in the air whether they will get off the WL’s (will all the dynamics at play that are unique this year cause acceptance off WL to be more or less than usual???) and when. They do have some good OOS options, but we toured last week, loved the schools, then came home depressed at how much this would all cost. I have paid high income taxes faithfully to the State of California for over 30 years, so I’m sorry but it sucks to hear OOS and international students get acceptances and our children get the WL. I realize parents in the states we just visited would feel exactly the same way about our children being admitted and theirs not, and they too have the right to feel that way. Just an extremely frustrating process.

Thanks for checking in. Appreciate everyone’s advice and suggestions on alternate routes. After talking it out with D24 and husband, we have decided to register for CC and keep our fingers crossed for a WL opening. It’s tough living in limbo, especially when we expect the wait to be longer than usual due to FAFSA, but it is what it is.

I actually spoke to her high school counselor this morning. It seems this year has been especially competitive across the board. A few other notes from our conversation were that:

  1. higher chance of transfer acceptance coming from CC vs gap year
  2. she was not aware of the cap on quarters/semesters for transfer students - will have to do my own research on this
3)!it’s highly likely that our results are driven by her choice of major (political science), which is impacted at many universities

Will keep you all posted. Hopefully with some good news from a waitlist :crossed_fingers:t3:

Yes, historically they will send out rejections for the waitlisted students.

We’re all rooting for those waitlists to move for your girl, but great CC backup plan.
I really, really think we’re going to see an update from you by June with news about a UC. Hang in there with all the waiting.

We can hope that this indicates the UCs were conservative with their initial admissions (which could be good for people on waitlists).

Of course all waitlisted students should still commit to a school where they are admitted, or firm up other plans such as CC. Good that you’ve connected with the HS counselor and are making sure there is a plan in place!

Wishing you the best of luck in this process! :crossed_fingers: :four_leaf_clover:

Side note: how do you guys get the other reaction emojis? I just have a “thumbs up” option

Are you on mobile?

On mobile it works for me to hold the thumbs up a bit longer. Then a menu comes up. On desktop the menu comes up when I hover.

If you are looking at the community college route, look for honors programs or programs that are created to help students who are interested in transferring to a UC. Sometimes those programs give priority registration, extra advising, etc.

Yes, our local CC has a track to UC. Need to make an appointment with a counselor to get some solid planning and not miss any opportunities

@PrayingToWaitlistGod - a friend’s child did this exact same route and was accepted at every UC he applied to (UCLA, Cal, UCSB, Davis and UCSD). In addition to using the CC counselor (who was very helpful) they also enlisted the help of Dan Ninnini (aka - Dan the Transfer Man) . You can google him…adding his link is flagging my post. He really helped ensure he was taking all the right pre-reqs as they can be different from campus to campus. Hoping this is not needed and the WL Gods come through for your daughter!!

My son said that two classmates got off the waitlist at UC Irvine yesterday. The question I have is whether it is unusual or SOP for offers of admission from the WL to occur at UC’s before the enrollment deadline.

Yes, last year several campuses admitted students off the waitlist before the SIR deadline. Does not happen every year.

Likely means that the trending of admits who already responded so far either “attending” or “not attending” is showing that a significant underyield is likely.

It’s like my original post last week. The same kids are admitted to multiple UCs and some are already narrowing down choices and declining certain campuses that they know they won’t attend.

This happens every year. UCs know and anticipate it. With the majority of admitted student days held last weekend, I’m sure there are a lot of decisions being made this week.

Based on the UCI waitlist thread, it sounds like the couple of people who were accepted yesterday were in engineering. @cyp238ress do you know if your son’s friends were applying into engineering?

Well, my own kid turned down UCD and SLO 2 weeks ago and just turned down UCSD and UCI.

Hoping for some butterfly effect here.

Last year my son got off the UCI waitlist before the SIR date and the UCSD waitlist after the SIR date.
