Waitlisted for Engineering Major but Admitted as Undecided

Please help us understand how the admission works.
EA applied around Nov.
OOS
Heard back yesterday staying
“Waitlisted for the Engineering School”
But admitted under undecided

Does the student start as undecided OR wait to accept?
Does the child have a chance to be accepted into the major?
Does anyone have an ETA for when the waitlist will come out?
Any additional tips or information is truly appreciated.

Thank you

I would have your student ask their admissions officer these questions…after checking the website.

DS has emailed the office. Just curious to hear other parents or students in similar situations.

He should make sure to directly email his AO too: Find Your Counselor

Good luck to him.

I assume you were admitted to Exploratory Studies.

It simply means (my interpretation) that you were admissible to the university but not the engineering school.

So you can work with an advisor and hope to transfer in.

Or go directly to a school where you were admitted for engineering and not have the worry.

But yes, call and discuss. There’s an email link on the attached to ask specific questions (which will be, how do they get into engineering)? Of course, when you hear the word Wait List - it makes you think - maybe there’s still a slight chance for this year.

Good luck.

This is great information. Thank you so much.

This is a pretty common result for applicants to engineering or business at CU Boulder. The student will have the opportunity to reapply to the schools/programs of interest later, but because these are so in-demand, the university will admit some applicants to exploratory studies instead (which essentially means undecided). I have no idea how many of these students who choose to attend CU ultimately end up in the programs they originally applied for - that would be worth asking.
