Just would like some feedback from some of you smart people;

Why do you think my d was waitlisted? Too many NY/NJ people at Emory?

Told admissions that Emory was at the “top of the list”

How many of you think this may have been a “demographic issue?”

Edit: already admitted to Vanderbilt, USC, etc…

that’s fairly normal, seeing as to how your d doesn’t exactly have amazing stats. a lot of people are accepted at one place and waitlisted at the other

I think your D’s stats are quite good. I really don’t know why some with similar stats get put in one pile, and others in another. I do think that Emory gets more applications from girls than from boys, so that may be part of what hurt your D. Maybe geography was an issue too. Also, I suspect Emory, like many other schools, was being super cautious in how many students they accepted initially, because they have no earthly idea how to predict their yield this year and will probably be going to the waitlist this year. Your D’s stats are good enough that she may be one of the first ones offered a spot if they need to go to the waitlist. Of course, I have no inside information or anything.

In a similar vein, my S got waitlisted at two schools that are less competitive than a few he got into, and my theory was that the waitlist was some sort of a test of his interest. His interest was strong when he interviewed, but they may have felt he’d be getting some offers he’d prefer. I don’t know. He won’t be waiting on those waitlists, so in a sense they were right. Then again, they didn’t know where he’d get in.

This was the most competitive year to date. Your daughter was able to get into other very competitive schools, and she should be proud of herself for such an accomplishment.

Do you know if her demonstrated interest such as her interview with the business school dean showed up on her opus? Mine only shows my tour and info session and I got rejected.

Hi Rodney - we are from New Jersey as well. We went to the local reception in Short Hills but did not visit. My son was accepted. He had higher SAT scores and GPA scores than your daughter, but not glaringly so. I don’t know the male/female mix at Emory - maybe they needed more males?

That being said, my son will not be going to Emory since he did not get financial aid. If enough people drop off the list, maybe your daughter will get in. My son was waitlisted for Hopkins but he refuses to stay on the waitlist.

NJMom: How are you holding up? Where is your son going? Did you call FA?My d will probably end up at Vanderbilt or Newhouse so all is actually good; I think she will probably stay on waitlist, although if it’s a demographic issue, not sure she would have a chance, but who knows…

Speaking of which, any northern NJ girls accepted RD? (we only know a couple even accepted ED)

I have to say I am very, very surprised at the number of people all over CC that got shafted by FA; when we visited, there was a big sales pitch for the endowment strength and how aggressive they are with FA…they are very generous with merit aid in the Scholar round, but then they deduct those awards from the FA packages anyway (I guess all schools do that)…It just seems that alot of people were led on to believe that FA would be stronger…

Rodney - Not that many students at our high school applied to Emory this year. My son has two male friends who applied and they were waitlisted. He does not know any females that applied.

I agree with your comment about the sales pitch during the info session. We were sure we would get some money based on the school’s large endowment. We were disappointed when my son was not a finalist for the Emory Scholar program but thought there would still be some money coming.

Right now he is considering Northwestern and UNC Chapel Hill.

Wow, tough choice and sooo different…My d originally had N’Western on her list (but eliminated it; didn’t think she was a “fit”)…UNC is amazing…are you re-visiting?

My son and husband revisited UNC several weeks ago for an admitted students session. They spent the weekend at Chapel Hill and my son loved it there. We also have family living in Chapel Hill which is nice. It was my idea to apply to NU and my son had no interest in the school until he was accepted. It was not until he was accepted that he realized what a good school it is. We have not visited yet but plan to in 2 weeks, unless he decides on UNC for sure. I am also calling Emory about the $ tomorrow.

I applied from northern NJ, too, and was waitlisted. I attended the Short Hills reception, but never visited. The only other person who applied from my school had similar stats and was rejected RD.

Rodney, I’m from “North Jersey” (Monmouth County) and my D was accepted RD. Not sure yet if she will go. We went to the Short Hills reception and she is going to look at the school in two weeks. I’ve seen the school which is why I encouraged her to apply. We have William & Mary, Wesleyan, and Colgate to complicate our decision.

gkc4: My daughter was actually on a 1st name basis with the NJ rep; unfortunately, Emory reads applications randomly…The reps are just assigned to geographic areas for recruiting. Also, we were informed yesterday that wait-listers are assigned to a rep based on the first letter of your last name…You can call office of admissions to find out who your “waitlist” rep is, but given the personalities of the staff, not sure they would even give it to you…

cj: If I could explain to you on this thread how much info I have found out about this situation in the last 4 days, it would take 5 pages…Please PM me with more info so I can help you…(when you PM me, please try and give me as much info as you are comfortable with)

By the way, other than helping others understand their situations, this thread should die…At this point, my d is not accepting her waitlist position…(she’s basically done “jumping through hoops” in her words…)

Also, Leibow: I didn’t see your thread before I posted…Just to let you know, demographically, anything below Edison is considered S. Jersey at Emory…

Your D has a tough decision to make; We are deciding between Vanderbilt and The Newhouse School@ Syracuse so, yes, adding Emory to the mix would have given her more choices in the South, but would have been very difficult…and yes, we were at the NJ reception as well and visited and interviewed, etc…we have found out that not much of that was relevant this year up here…

I called the Emory office, and they gave me the name and email of the waitlist rep for my last name, so I wondering more along the lines could I go to Emory and meet him on-the-spot so I could just give him my things personally so I wouldn’t have to mess around with the mail stuff? I live approximately an hour away from Emory.
