Waitlisted...should I apply again next year?

Hey guys.
I applied to Penn RD and got waitlisted. I’m thinking about staying another year of high school and apply to Penn again next year if I don’t get accepted from the waitlist (possible in Canadian high school). I think I can be admitted if I apply to Penn ED next year. I couldn’t this year because I applied to Cornell ED. I got a higher score on the SAT in last December so I think I have a great chance in ED.

If I decide to this, I’m going to do volunteer work all year and take the SAT and SAT II one more time. Do you think this is a good idea or should I just go to another college? If anyone has any stories or information about my situation, please share. It would help me alot. Thanks

One of the stupidest ideas I’ve read on CC.

Post grad? Those are for sports athletes to train to be better in college and get recruited. No one takes a 5th year in HS just to get into college. Which high school would you be doing this at? Why didnt you apply to Penn ED this year, and why did you apply to Cornell. Do you just want to get into the Ivy League? Is your ego that needy?

WOW

if you couldn’t get in ED to cornell this year or RD to penn, what makes you think that you can do it by taking a FIFTH year of hs?

seriously? just go to college where you got in dude.

don’t despair. Just go to Upenn for graduate school or perhaps transfer if you want to go there that bad.

i mean… if you honestly feel like you will grow as a person from a nother year of high school. go for it! The way i see it, some people grow at different rates as others. Maybe you need five years to make the big leap? I dunno – don’t worry about what other’s say. If you feel like it is the best for you, not to be confused with your ego, then go for it. But if you feel ready for college now, just go to a state school. If you are dead set on an ivy, then just transfer.

Other people, don’t be so harsh. My (boarding, prep school) has several academic PGs every year (along with several athletic PGs–though it’s usually a combination).

But no one takes 5 years for HS. College is not the be all end all.

What school are you in? I am in Duke and may go to UPenn, but if I get accepted off the waitlist I will visit first.

If you are not in a top 10 school like Duke or Stanford or UPenn then you could reapply I guess, but I still think that idea is stupid. College will be fun and developmental wherever you choose to go, and if you want to go to UPenn so badly you can definitely just transfer after one year or two years.

Don’t waste another year in high school, though!

go to college and apply again as a transfer in two yrs for junior standing… if u got rejected its very probable u will be rejected again as a freshman but will have a better chance as a sophomore

kingbell (OP): Go to another college and apply for transfer to Penn if you really feel that Penn is the only place you’ll ever be happy. If you stay in HS you will (IMO) tarnish your perceived value to any college (including Penn). You will also never allow yourself to grow to realize that Penn is not the only place you’ll ever be happy. Talk to 99.9% of college students and they will tell you that wherever you go will end up being your home and you will wonder what it was about “that other school” that had such a hold on you. But like I said, if Penn is all you can think about, then go somewhere in Fall 2009, make a big impact, and try to transfer to Penn next year. Keep in touch with Penn admissiosn (transfer rep) throughout the year.
