Waitlisted. So...what now?

I was waitlisted for Renssaleor(?) polytech (RPI).

I really thought I would get in but I wasn’t.

So…when do they notify you of the very final decision?
And what is the chance of me getting accepted after being waitlisted?

I applied for the engineering department with
SAT: M 750 W750 CR630
SAT2: MathIIC:790 Chem: 700
UW GPA:3.9 W GPA:4.1

It’s different for every school. Usually, schools notify you a few weeks after May 1st, which means its absolutely important to pay a deposit to another school you’d be willing to go. If RPI actually does open up a spot for you, you’ll just forfeit the deposit at the other school.

Acceptance after waitlist varies per school.

You just need to write to them (send a letter, not an email) about your interest in the school. If you intend to enroll if admitted, then say that.

Prospects for being accepted off a waitlist are slim, so don’t count on it. Make sure you have other options and plan on one of them.

Forfeit the deposit??? Like… The tuition?
Well…I’m not too crazy about that school so I guess I won’t be enrolling there.

Thank you.

^No, not the tuition. Just the deposit. You have to choose a school by the national deadline, May 1. If you choose School B, with hopes of getting off of RPI’s waitlist and onto RPI’s acceptance list, then you’ll have to pay a deposit to School B (often around $200-$400). If RPI later accepts you, say over the summer, and you elect to attend RPI instead of School B, you may lose your deposit. (The deposit refund policy is up to the school – you might lose only a portion of it; you might lose all of it.)

You’re not too crazy about what school? RPI? Or do you mean you’re not too crazy about School B?

Isn’t there an RPI forum, dhs? If so, you might get more information by posting your questions there. Ask “them” what the likelihood is of getting off the waitlist. People who frequent that forum will be more likely to know those specifics.

Good luck to you! :)

Oh I see so it’s not too much money.
Well hopefully I’ll get into my dream school and then I won’t have to worry about this!
Thanks for the help!

Wow, that’s harsh. I’m surprised you were waitlisted, as your stats look like a solid match (at least) for RPI. Perhaps you should get in touch with them, ask some questions, express interest. There could very well be an error somewhere.

Perhaps they somehow knew you couldn’t even spell their name?

Don’t understand how you were waitlisted. My stats were far lower than yours and I was waitlisted as well.
