Having applied to a number of ridiculously selective universities, I am pretty sure I will be waitlisted at at least one of them. Can strong final grades potentially help a waitlisted student gain admission to an Ivy League school or equivalent?

Yes, you definitely will be asked to update your stats if waitlisted. My S was wait-listed at the big H, Midd, Dartmouth, Amherst, and Tufts last year, and his continued excellent grades probably helped him get into Midd. He also was kept on the H wait list thru several cuts-finally turned down in late June…

Congrats to your son on his acceptance to Middlebury! Thanks for the response!

Anyone else?

I applied to three Ivies and MIT, but I’m out of high school now with great grades… do you think this’ll help?

Yes. I daughter finished off senior year with the best grades in her calss. She was able to get off waitlist at Cornell and Duke. Of course, she was lucky that those schools went to their waitlist her year.

My son was waitlisted at several top schools. None asked for final transcript.

Yes, good grades will improve your chances of getting off the waitlist. Which is good news, since schools are projected to draw heavily on their waitlists after being modest with their acceptances as the yield becomes increasingly hard to predict.
