Waitlists for Summer Programs

Im currently waitlisted to a program I want to go to, but there’s minimal information about it. i was just told that my application will be kept in an active file and that I would find out by a certain date if I get in or not.

Is it worth emailing the program regarding how many people are on the waitlist, how many people get off the waitlist, if the waitlist is ranked, etc.? I’m pretty sure the person I would email is the same person that decides if I get off the waitlist also.

Im not sure if this would hurt my chances of getting in by sounding really nervous/desperate. I already emailed a LOCI and the program director thanked me for giving him some more information and that I would find out by a certain date if there is space.

I guess my bottom line question is, does getting waitlisted generally mean anything? Or is being waitlisted the traditional “soft rejection” for summer programs?

Edit: I thought it was worth mentioning that for the program I am looking at didn’t have an “opt-in waitlist” form. I was just automatically placed on the waitlist. Any thoughts on this as well?

Also, does anyone have any tips for getting off the waitlist? Thanks!

You’ve already sent the LOCI so at this point you’ve done what you can. I would suggest just sitting tight on the waitlist and (while you’re waiting) look for backup plans for this summer.

Competitive summer programs that take applicants outside the US need waitlists as there can always be problems with visas, among other issues. So the waitlists do get utilized. But pestering the organization about details about the list is probably not a good use of your time, or of theirs. Just get your backup plan in place.
