Wake Forest Early Decision for Fall 2024 Admission

Thank you. I am seeing posts like that in many of the selective and highly selective college blogs in here. I can tell you that we used no outside counselors and my son did not want me to read his essay until after he applied so I didn’t influence it. I hear the frustrations. Myself and my husband went to State schools so he had no legacy at the schools he was considering. I just can’t imagine why colleges that post high graduation rates would want to admit kids that may struggle, transfer out &/or not graduate?!

My son had all his ED requirements in Oct 28th. We are in the Midwest and our school also said they should not submit until interim grades were out and recommendations to your point.

I’m a cynic, but schools are focused on the short term–bumping up their endowment! I wish your son only the best and know he’ll love it! It’s a fun school and it sounds like he has the work ethic and smarts to be super successful!

It seems insane to me how many people use these outside counselors. It’s thousands and thousand of dollars. Nobody in nyc should be ready to apply in August–we don’t start until after Labor Day! The schools’ own college counselors have not even read any of their essays yet! But colleges turn a blind eye and they don’t really care what happens once they’re admitted…students will muddle through and the school hope for a big check. The high schools get the admittance, and in their eyes, everyone wins. It is a fundamentally broken system. Don’t even get me started on some of the Ivies. Yikes.

Sorry to hear about your son’s outcome. The Wake summer program seems to actually work against kids. It’s really something given how expensive it is! I know of a kid who was in the July program and got deferred too. Great student and in the zone in terms of grades, really great extracurriculars, leadership, etc. I know they can’t admit everyone, but the data from kids in the program is bleak.

I am an early action international student, I submitted my application on November 16th, yesterday I received an email asking me to upload the documents regarding the funding. My stats are 1480 sat, 3.9 gpa, lots of activities, leadership roles, I haven’t had an interview, but I plan to send a video. what are my chances

Essay prompts are released in advance. There’s no reason a student couldn’t write on their own over the summer and apply in August.

Don’t let anonymous posters complaining about admissions get you down, most likely sour grapes. The moderation of this thread has been poor, generally posters are limited to posting only about their own child, and in a supportive manner. Applications are up again this year at Wake and there are going to be qualified kids who might have been admitted in past years who are rejected.

Aren’t all schools need blind?

No.

Not at all. Many of the very most selective are. Many are not. Many are need aware and will examine your ability to pay as a factor in the admission decision.

This is my 3rd child going to college (all private universities) and I have never heard of this.

Wake Forest is 100% need aware. If you did not select financial aid on your common app, they will send you an email advising that you will be in eligible for financial aid during your entire four years there unless there is a dramatic change in circumstances. Wake Forest definitely takes this into consideration as other colleges, like university of Miami.

We do not qualify for FA, but I am surprised by this. Don’t they still match need?

And we didn’t get that email yet?

Call your admissions officer and ask. They’re very upfront about it.

Oh it’s fine. I’m just surprised. We don’t qualify anyway.

Yes, they meet need for students that are admitted and need aid. Need aware means that they have a limit on how many students needing aid that they accept, so it can factor into an acceptance decision. It’s not uncommon beyond the big endowment schools. Wash U was need aware until a year or two ago and they have a big endowment.

What is your experience with merit scholarships at Wake?

Hello, how important are the videos? And is it possible to ask for an interview instead?
