Wake Forest or Carnegie Mellon?

I’m pretty sure that I want to study business and have to decide between Calloway at Wake Forest and Tepper at Carnegie Mellon. Which would you recommend?

id go to wake

Carnegie Mellon

Well, if you care about rankings, US News ranked the undergrad business program at CMU #5 and WFU #30. However, I think Wake offers a better college experience. It’s up to you and what you’re looking for in a college, though.

No offense to WF but how can you guys compare the two. Tepper is a top 5 with a median salary of 55k without bonuses. This is on par with the other top schools of Ross, Stern, and even Wharton.

Wake Forest is probably more “fun” but don’t listen to rumors. Upitt is intermingled with CMU’s campus and the city of Pittsburgh is entering a new revival. Walk down the streets and you see 80% college kids having fun and doing stuff. There are really infinite things to do in Pittsburgh and it is the nation’s 2nd largest college town.

Carnegie. no doubt.

carnegie mellon

There’s a number of reasons to consider carefully. After all, the OP has a month.

 1. An undergrad business degree is not necessary to succeed in business, nor is it a requirement for an MBA. Duke is an example par exellence.
 2. If the OP decides not to pursue business, (s)he should have a school strong in a variety of areas. Even the most certain freshmen often realize they should take a different path.
 3. Wake’s placement is quite good, and many of its grads work in Charlotte. Considering it’s the 2nd largest banking city in the US, it’s not something to overlook. Richmond is also a popular place for graduates.
 4. Fit is more important. It’s all very well to be getting a good education at a school, but it’s not worth it if you’re miserable. Don’t downplay the importance.

CMU gets you interns at top firms and ibanking. It definitely helps. You can succeed from a community college in business as well (my uncle) but it is about chances and heavy recruting. CMU was named the “Hottest Place to get a Job” by Forbes.

CMU > Wake Forest in just about everything and even liberal arts has its appeals since recruiters associate CMU as an university rather than distinct colleges. You can see from the 2005 post-graduate data that the median salaries and job opps are around the same.

So you automatically assume the op will have a better time at Wake and will be miserable at CMU? I think the opposite. Pittsburgh is AMAZING and has great job opps as well as bars/clubs and a NEW emerging nightlife. When you pick CMU, you get U.pitt, Duquesne, (other colleges), Shadyside, the Waterfront, etc (not just the CMU campus!).

"Wake’s placement is quite good, and many of its grads work in Charlotte. Considering it’s the 2nd largest banking city in the US, it’s not something to overlook. Richmond is also a popular place for graduates. "

Humor me…39k of Wake Forest vs 55k of CMU.

http://www.wfu.edu/career/employers/salarysurvey.html</a></p>

Tepper is comparable to the other top business schools as shown here:

Wharton:

Avg Salary for 2005: 53,999 Range:26k-95k

AVg Salary for 2004: 52,267 Range:26k-85k

Stern:

2004 average: $52,110

<a href=“Career Development and Jobs”>Career Development and Jobs;

Tepper 2005:

Max: 80k

Min: 40k

Median: 55,000

Mean: 53,449

http://www.studentaffairs.cmu.edu/career/employ/salary/ba.pdf</a>

Ross:

2005 Median: 50,000

2005 Mean: 50,175

Range: 12,000-77,000

http://www.bus.umich.edu/EmploymentProfile/EmploymentOverview.htm?StudentType=BBAGrads</a></p>

Now you’re putting words into my mouth!  :stuck_out_tongue: I never said the OP would be miserable at CMU. It’s true that I don’t think the same student would be happy at both places, but that works both ways. I’m not promoting one or the other; I’m just trying to make sure the OP carefully evaluates both choices.

By the way, how did you change your CC name? I’ve wanted to change mine because nobody gets the reference and most get it wrong.

Hahaha. I would suggest you PM a mod? I think mine happened 'cause of the length of my old one :)

I agree that no school is perfect for every student but I will give the facts. Pittsburgh is always underrated (YES IT SUCKED IN THE PAST) but it is soo much better now. Also come on… 55k vs 39k…

go to carnegie mellon

CMU (10) characters

“Wake’s placement is quite good, and many of its grads work in Charlotte. Considering it’s the 2nd largest banking city in the US, it’s not something to overlook. Richmond is also a popular place for graduates.”

2nd largest banking city? Whered you hear that? I doubt it’s bigger than Chicago, New York, San Francisco, or Dallas.

Tepper>Wake

CMU >>>>>> Wake
