I read in this morning’s paper that Walden University is going to change to a for-profit institution. Do you think this will change the culture at the University? If I had a high school student I would be very cautious about applying to Walden at this point until we can determine how this change in status will affect the University’s ability to provide a quality education at reasonable cost. How will it affect financial aid? What about existing students? So many questions…

As the kids say: I see what you did there. :)

I trust President King.

I never heard of Walden, so I googled it. Founded ‘in 1970 by 2 teachers who sought a way for adults in the workforce to pursue their doctoral degrees’. It doesn’t sound like it was ever a traditional U. According to wikipedia, Sylvan learning systems bought 41% of it in 2001 and gained a controlling interest in 2002. It appears to have been for-profit for several years already, I found a 2010 article about it being for profit.

Who’s president King?

I don’t know, Hunt. Though they’ve had some distinguished grads in the past ;), the more recent ones never seem to graduate. Can they monetize that?

(Mamabear–hint: the “founder” of this Walden University’s initials are GT, and you’re more apt to find out about it in a graphic section of the newspaper.)

Zonker for Dean of Admissions!

President King bears a remarkable resemblance to the late Kingman Brewster.

I get crap at least once a week in the mail from them for grad school. I thought they were already a for profit school.

I did think this was interesting, and I did read it in today’s paper, but I don’t want anyone to misunderstand this thread.

Here is where I read this news => http://assets.amuniversal.com/96a3c760634001301a1f001dd8b71c47

I am also interested in where Trudeau goes with this, NJres.

OK. I don’t read the comic section! Sounds like art imitating life, since there is a for-profit Walden. You guys must all be old! I didn’t realize Doonesbury was still going.

^In my paper, Doonesbury is on the editorial page except on Sundays. I don’t think you need to be old to read it; it’s always entertaining and relevant.

Agreed Garland, Doonesbury is today’s equivalent of the Pogo strip…now THAT’S and old reference!

Isn’t it actually Walden College?

Doonesbury = my favorite comic strip. :D

Aww I feel duped.

Oh well, it was funny :D

I remember Pogo.
In fact I have a photo of some students reading it at Reed College in the 60s.
My dad also loved it.
I liked Peanuts.

It appears that Walden University and Walden College were born at about the same time–in 1970–although the college in Doonsbury was unnamed for a while.

So you piqued my curiosity, and I found it in the paper (it is in the comic section here).

Garland, I didn’t mean you had to be old to read it, but that the only people I knew who read it did so when it started 40+ years ago. I remember it a bit from the 70’s, but I was younger than the characters and it was not relevant to my life at that time. Maybe I will start following it now.

Doonsbury has begun to focus more on some of its younger characters. I like it because it’s often very humane.
