Walk out today at Noon

So today at Noon the students in the behavioral science dept walked out, along with a wink and a nod from the profs. The Behavorial dept has 30% of the student body and only get 12% in funding.

The other big news is hard core porn will be shown on Saturday night at the Stamp Union

[University of Maryland student union to screen porn film – baltimoresun.com](http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/education/college/bal-movie0401,0,3208013.story)

Hmmm, regarding the movie at the Stamp. D will be off campus Sat night at a language workshop on a diff Md campus. Her loss.

Back in the dinosaur ages at the no name universities that H and I attended, there were several porn movies shown throughout the year. Rumor has it that you needed to get there early in order to get a seat. Contrary to the “alternative to heavy drinking” that is cited in the link, I seem to remember that it was even a better excuse to drink heavily before and after going to see the movies! :0

haha, actually my friend works at the hoff, and supposedly people are like, pre-ordering tickets to pirates. And i think they’re showing it at midnight, because last time they showed a porn, it was like, at the normal movie time, and people just coming to see a movie were like WHAT?! when they figured out what they had bought  haha that would be so uncomfortable i can’t even imagine.
And my friend did the BSOS walkout today, she said it went pretty well, they had a lot of people and handed out a ton of petitions and everything, hopefully it gets something done, funding sucks for BSOS

According to Baltimore Sun, screening has been canceled. Why would a university want to promote hard core Porn??

What’s the “official line” behind the BSOS funding? Since it’s not as technology-heavy as some departments (thinking engineering, etc.), is that part of the reason? Since neither my current terp D or future terp D are in BSOS…I don’t have any first-hand experience. Can someone supply more info?

Oh man, some of my friends (including females) are going to be disappointed at the cancellation–they were discussing it last night and seemed excited.

According to the “I’m a BSOS student and I pay for your education” Facebook group, ENGR receives 41 million dollars in funding annually whereas BSOS receives $33 million. I would say part of the funding discrepancy stems from the research done in ENGR is more expensive to do that BSOS.

However, I think the problem is that BSOS has a very large student body (most graduating seniors get BSOS degrees) and they have to implement methods to keep the population lower. One disadvantage that BSOS has is that many of their majors are NOT limited enrollment programs, or are LEPs that only restrict based on requirements, not discretion. ENGR, because it is completely an LEP college, can keep its numbers really low.

Haha, this all over the local news in maryland.

In regards to the other news, I am very concerned that UMD would cancel that movie. This is a complete violation of first amendment rights from my standpoint, and I think that it was inappropriate for the legislature to even CONSIDER cutting funding for an educational institution because of something that did not cost the state a dime.

The issue with BSOS is that 30% of the students graduate from this school and only 12% of the budget is dedicated to them. Thus, they are definetely doing more with less. I spoke to DS1 about it yesterday and he said that the feeling at least in his dorm (Scholars) is that the profs are very appreciative that the kids are doing this to support them. In actual dollars and cents it comes down to having profs work more for less money. Less scholarships, less grants, less everything.

To me I couldn’t care if it is an LEP or not, the fact is every student is paying their fair share in tuition, and when you find out that your tuition is not supporting your progam it is a slap in the face. People chose UMD for programs like Scholars and Gemstone, and then to find out that their tuition is going more to ENGR than their own program leaves a very sour taste.

I understand the athletic side getting more, but let’s be honest they bring in a hell of a lot of money to the school, thus they should get a nice cut of the pie. In the ENGR theory, if they have a smaller pop. than they should get a smaller cut since they don’t need as much.

In fairness what UMD should do is give ea dept an allocated amt per student. I.E. if UMD says that for their budget we have determined that $1500 will go for ea student for educational purposes. Multiply that number out to the number in the dept and there is your budget. Fair is fair, nobody can go off and complain. The only problem that may occur from this is we will start a sliperry slope… why certain dorms are only for certain students…the loss of elite programs, such as Smith b/c of higher funding it does attract higher achieving students…etc…etc…etc.

As a student, I’m disappointed about the porn thing. It’s not the proper place. It’s obscene material.
And the university administrator suggesting it as an option “to drinking at bars”… As if there weren’t many other things for students to involve themselves in that porn and drinking. It really shows how the university views its students.
Really sad that a small segment of campus is trying to redefine the state’s flagship university and the name on the degrees of thousands into a national joke. Maryland’s a great university, but for the past week, it’s been Porn U. That’s embarrassing to everyone connected to the university.
