Prompt: Should heroes be defined as people who say what they think while we ourslves lack the courage to say it?

A person does not need to do something extreme in order to earn the title ‘hero’. The biggest trait a hero can have is to have the courage to say what is on their mind. There are few people who do that, and if no one knows what one thinks, they never succeed. Speaking up can stop unfair taxation, help with personal problems, and assist in stopping disputes between religion, amongst other things.

The Boston Tea Party is a great example of heroes who said--or acted--on what they thought was right. When King George taxed the English products without listening to what anyone from the American colonies thought about the tax, Americans were angry. 'Taxation without representation is unfair!' they argued. When they let King George know what they thought and dumped out all the tea, they were heroes--not only did they let England know it was wrong to tax without letting America know beforehand, but they acted on their argument. This made them heroes.

Another example on how all one needs to do to be a hero is to speak his or her mind comes from Life of Pi by Yann Martel. All his life, Pi has struggled with his faith. Born to Hindu parents, Pi never really knew what he believed in. After learning about Christianity and Islam, he decided that he was part Muslim, Christian, and Hindu. Pi tells his parents that, to their dismay, he is not just Hindu. Being able to tell his parents the truth about his faith and speak his mind makes Pi a hero.

Mohandas Karamchand Ghandi is yet another ordinary person that spoke his mind, and is now regarded as a hero. A firm Hindu, Ghandi thought that it was terrible how much Hindus and Muslims hated each other. Ghandi then did what no one else had ventured to do: he spoke his mind. Ghandi scolded everyone for not being able to get along, and helped devise an understanding between the two religions so the two religions would not clash as much. Because Ghandi spoke his mind, he became a true hero to look up to.

Being a hero is not just about doing supernatural things--on the contrary, it is about speaking up. If no one speaks his mind, the world would never improve. Instead, the world would stay the same. Because of this, it is vital to understand that a hero speaks his or her mind.

I wrote this in the test booklet (handwritten) in 25 minutes.

Bummmmpp! =)

Take my word with a grain of salt, as I suck at writing essays myself.

Your essay seems to just recite anecdotes and not give much critical thinking/explanation. E.g. your “life of Pi” example just says in the last sentence that he was a hero because he was outspoken, but nothing in your paragraph supports that claim - WHY he would be considered a hero. It simply says that he told his parents his religion.

So I would give your essay a 4/5 simply because of length.

Prompt:People who have achieved success do not give up easily. On the other hand , people who fall short of their goals give up too soon.Persistence is in the blood of those who make it to the top.
Assignment:Is persistence all that is needed to be successful?

Essay:

When Jinnah , the founder of Pakistan was elected as its first chief executive , it was his persistence that fulfilled his destiny and brought hope to the Muslim minority in the subcontinent.Ostensibly speaking , persistence is all that is needed to be successful.
Jinnah , in struggling for a separate homeland for Muslims faced many hurdles. He was ridiculed, heckled and censured by the massive Hindu opposition on scores of occasions. Under such an immense stress , he could have easily given up on his dream. After all he was an established lawyer with quite a comfortable living. And yet he did not. Why? Because he believed in himself and despite of numerous failures , his persistence dragged him forward.Persistence brought him success and hope to millions of Muslims of the Sub-Continent who now were now blessed with a separate homeland.
Successful people infact donot give up that easily. Failure overshadows their short successes and tends to swallow what they achieved. But from all the stories of those who succeed in fulfilling their dreams and ambitions , one thing they have in abundance is persistence. Look at Galileo for example. When he deduced that the earth revolved around the sun, he was met with severe criticism from the church and the priests who were adamant about the way that they percieved the universe.Yet Galileo did not give up on his ideas but continued to work in his capacity.Result: His findings now form the basis of cosmology and have been proven time and again.
I conclude by stating that all people dream. Some work to fulfill them.Few live them. And few people who do constitute those who were persistent in pursuing their ambitions and who were not overwhelmed by the failures they met with.Persistence is infact all that is needed to become successful.Rest of the ingredients follow shortly.
