Want to switch major, but I don’t know how to tell parents?

I am currently a college sophomore and a Pre-Nursing student (not in the Nursing program yet). I am finding my classes to be extremely hard especially my science courses (Organic Chemistry and Human Anatomy). Nursing is all new to me and I have never taken a CNA class either, compared to most of my classmates who have. It has been at least 4 weeks of classes already and I am finding that maybe Nursing is just not the right path for me based on two exams I have taken this past week (I failed my Chemistry exam as well as my Human Anatomy exam.) I also think I can’t maintain my GPA and my GPA will fall if I continue my exam pattern.
I love my parents and will do anything to satisfy them. One of the real reasons why I chose Nursing was the fact that I was persuaded by my two parents to major in it because according to my parents, nursing is currently one of the most demanded paying job and are guaranteed a job in the medical field, which is true. My dad is a physician and I am the oldest child, so yes there is a ton of pressure on me. My mom always talks about how I am going to be a Nurse to everyone, and that she says “You can do this and this once you finish college” and so on… What bothers me the most is, what will my parents say if I told them I want to switch major. I know for a fact that the topic money will come into play. My mom constantly reminds me that I better finish college or else I am wasting money. Yes, I want to finish college and earn my Bachelor degree, but I’m not sure if I want to earn a degree in Nursing. I want to major in Business specifically Finance, but I’m not to sure if it’s a good paying job. I took Algebra I and II in high school and I took College Algebra and I loved it!! I’ve heard that Finance is calculus, but I’m not sure if is calculus? I love numbers and plugging in numbers into equations. Do you know of any major that does this?
My question: Should I change major now or later? It is the first semester here at my college, but it is already into Week 4. The WD deadline has already passed. Should I switch major now or change it in Spring 2012 because I would have to take business courses right? How should I go about telling my parents that I no longer want to continue on majoring as a Nursing student before I meet with my academic advisor? I have an appointment set to meet with my academic advisor sometime soon in the first week of October. I am not sure how the process of changing major works? I want to graduate on time (2014) but I’m not sure if I will.

PS Sorry this is long, but any advice you can give me will help me tremendously!

It doesn’t sound like you have to tell them yet.

It sounds like you have to finish thise semester’s classes, and it sounds like your grades in the important pre-nursing classes will be too low to be accepted into the program.

Frankly, it may all just fall into place. I’m not suggesting that you purposely do poorly (that wouldn’t be wise), but if you do your best and end up with C’s in your pre-reqs then your family will have to accept that you can’t do nursing and that you have to choose something else.

It’s best not to say anything now, otherwise they will think that you purposely aren’t doing well.

Lots of kids start out in nursing or pre-med and find out that they can’t do the pre-reqs (they’re hard!).

When you meet with your advisor, tell him what’s going on and discuss the B-school route.
