S2 wears the Carhartt hoodie but with the quarter zip instead of full zip.
He also wears his Columbia fleece all the time.
He pulls out the heavy Carhartt jacket only if forced.

Hey, at least they’re wearing sleeves. I have 6 teenage male cousins, and they all live in NJ. They wear basketball shorts in the winter, outside, even when there’s snow on the ground. BASKETBALL SHORTS.

^My kids would have done that when they were in elementary school if I had let them. I usually hid the shorts in November so the other Moms didn’t berate me!

How funny that the EB hoodies and throws came up here. Yesterday we got an EB catalog and as I was snuggling on the couch last night, huddled under a soft throw I looked through it and was wondering if I should get the lined hoodie for my older son. My younger has two that I bought him last year - one from Old Navy that’s not real thick and another one that’s is lined like a jacket but looks like a hoodie. Of course, he’s wearing the thinner one still even though it’s below freezing… What I don’t get is that my boys are still wearing t-shirts under their sweatshirts. I, OTOH, have been layered up for two months with long sleeve shirts and sweaters. Due to hot flashes, I can no longer wear turtlenecks but can’t imagine wearing t-shirts.

I bought this for my son when he had the same issue:

[Amazon.com: Carhartt Men’s Thermal-Lined Hooded Zip-Front Sweatshirt: Clothing](http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002GHCEAO/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&redirect=true)

One thing that I’m seeing from the EB review is that there is NO fleece lining in the arms, which seems a little strange. Is the Carhartt one insulated in the sleeves? I don’t like that big logo on the side of the pocket on the Carhartt - Can that be razored off?

The label is sewn on, you can just cut the stitches.

Another son here who considers a T shirt and a hoodie about all he needs for winter. Admittedly, we are in Texas, but it does freeze. If it is really cold, he will pull on a second hoodie.

I am going to check out the lined ones you all have suggested.

I bought the LLBean fleece yesterday for my H. When I looked at it at work, it said, “not available until Dec. 18”. By the time I got home and ordered it, it said, “not available until Jan. 11” - did CC flood their orders!!??

:) Still going to get it though. I’ll just wrap up a picture for Christmas.

I’m sitting here chuckling. I was in the kitchen this morning watching my two high schoolers getting ready to head out the door and asked them if they actually own a warm coat. (Yes–we’re definitely in that cold wave in the eastern half of the country.) Lots of sweatshirts, and they have ski jackets, although they’re more shells that I don’t think work well for warmth. I started thinking, “Would it be crazy to start a CC thread on what kind of jacket a teenaged boy will actually wear?”

FWIW, the older one headed out in a jacket that a college friend of my oldest’s left here–kind of a full-zip hoodie with an outer quilted plaid jacket attached that I think is butt ugly but actually seems like it’d be pretty warm. Looks kind of like something a hunter would wear?

lol, kathiep…in some parts of the world Carhartt is cool and they wouldn’t think of cutting the label off. S2 has the heavy insulated jacket w/ hood, the hooded sweatshirt, the boot socks, and the knit hat with “Carhartt” stitched cross the front of it. When he was in h.s. he opted for the heavy Carhartt jacket over buying a varsity letter jacket (told him I wasn’t buying both). All his buddies had Carhartts.
Good decsion since over three years later he’s still wearing the Carhartt at college while the letter jacket would have been ditched as soon as he finished h.s.
