I’ve received an acceptance from University Of Flordia and a direct admission in Kelley School of Business (IUB). I intend on pursuing finance as my major (Undergrad). I’m an international student and also interested participating in various activities like tennis club, etc. Not a big party type of person.
Any suggestions on which one I should opt for and also the merits and demerits of both ?
Experiences of current students would also be really helpful !!
My son was in the same position between IU Kelley Honors and UF. I gave you what I found:
IU Kelley:
- From a curriculum perspective, Kelley designs an outstanding program with concrete rationality. I conclude after researching the top 30 business undergraduate schools. It combines both technical aspects and sales with many hands-on classes. IU is also a school’s favourite of Big 4 and has good placement if you can get in IB workshop (It’s very competitive)
- Kelley’s biggest disadvantage is the large number of students, almost 5x others. As a result, it’s more difficult for internship, and employment if you’re an international student (don’t underestimate this). Sometimes, the students are not the same quality. Some might be lazy, some might be weird. If you could get into ACE, this disadvantage would be eliminated.
- Other schools at IU might not have strength as Kelley does. Therefore, if you want to do double majors or attend extra courses, it might not yield a decent opportunity as expected.
If you are 100% return home country, Kelley is a good choice, won’t make you regret it.
For UF, the student body is smaller and it has two advantages:
-
UF is the flagship of Florida, the top 4 richest state in the US, and Miami has the largest number of banks. There will be many opportunities, especially when you can join various clubs and workshops since the freshmen year. The sky is the limit. You don’t have to wait till the third year in Kelley to join the IB workshop. I attached here finance events in one semester only.
-
UF enables many opportunities across the university, where you can learn or join teams in many fields. It’s easier to find undergraduate research or team up for a competition.
Finally, we picked UF over IU Kelley but we are sure Kelley is a great school.
Kelly wins hands down. It is HIGHLY regarded and #19 in the nation. UF doesn’t make this list. The Best Business Schools List
In this global ranking, which might be much more important to you as an international student, IU is 51, and UF is 101. That is a substantial difference. QS World University Rankings for Business and Management Studies 2019 | Top Universities
Of course, there are many other rankings lists, but IU Kelly is very well known.
I could go on. Kelly is very highly regarded.
As an international student are you aware of recent Florida laws and how they affect public universities there?
Thank you for the insights.
I see, thank you for the information
No, I’m not aware of them. Could you please provide some insights regarding them ?
I haven’t been completely following, and I’m not sure how much it would affect business schools.
I’m sure others are more knowledgeable.
Oh okay
Unless you greatly favor the setting/weather/vibe at Florida, I would choose Kelley hands-down.
Kelley is great, and IU is very strong overall.
This is an MBA school ranking list.
Congrats on your acceptances. Your choice really depends on what factors are most appealing to you.
- Both schools will have a not-insignificant number of students who party, but you will be able to find people at both who don’t.
- I would take a look at the business core classes and pay attention to any that are online only.
- Similarly look at the finance major course requirements as well as profs and their research areas.
- Weather will be warm year round in Florida, IU will have four seasons.
- Both schools will have plenty of opportunities for clubs and activities…some will be competitive entry, some will be open to all.
- Both are in conservative states, but the colleges and their areas are generally more liberal than the state.
What are your career goals? Spend some time on each school’s career center site, they will both have ample programming, panels, presentations, advising, and the like.
Kelley’s undergrad ranking is 8 on USNWR U.S. News ranks Kelley School undergraduate program and eight specialties in the top 10 – Kelley School of Business
UF is 23.
Ah, thanks.
Take the direct admission to IU-Kelley. The business programs at Kelley–both undergraduate & graduate are well run.
Check out whether U Florida is still using remote classes due to overcrowding.
