Was Emory NOT competitive to get into this year?

I can speak from the perspective of an Emory Scholar and I KNOW the Scholars were very qualified. Even though I was awarded a Robert Woodruff Scholarship everyone there was also very deserving of admission and a scholarship to Emory. There are a couple of people I know, including myself, that also have been accepted to Ivy Leagues (Harvard and Princeton) .I have a friend that was deserving of admittance but has been wait listed. Yes, in my opinion Emory was competitive. Sometimes a person just may not be that “piece of the puzzle” a college is looking for.

Hello all,

I am a student at Emory University and I also work in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. I have been reading through this thread awhile and I just wanted to make a few comments.

Emory University is not getting less competitive; it is still hard to get into Emory. Most of you forget that Emory, like a lot of other top tier schools, decides who gets in through a holistic manner. I know, for a fact, that a lot of people this year got wait listed/rejected not because of their ACT/SAT scores or their GPA, but because of teacher recommendations, essays, and other areas that Emory might find important. For some of you guys that have been on this board talking about the reason minorities get into Emory is because of affirmative action. Well, you are wrong. I work closely with these people everyday and none of them know if the students are Black, White, Mix, Hispanic, or Asian. When your application is received, the admission counselor does not know your background information because it is filed separately for statistical purpose. And for the person that posted the link to the Emory Wheel article about admission percentage going up, I will tell you something: since less people applied to Emory (10.5 percent declined) Emory has to accept more so the Freshman class can have the same number of students as the previous ones. Seeing that there was a 10.5 percent decline in application and our admission percentage went up only by 3 percent, I would say it is becoming harder to get into Emory. And for the other person that says that Emory rankings will go down: PLEASE do your research. Rankings is not at all based on acceptance rates. There is not a lot factor into it and for you to make the assumption that Emory will go down, YOU DO NOT DESERVE to be at my University. For those of you who are wondering, there are a multitude of factors used in making rankings and most of them is how the students and other college deans feel about the University as a whole. So please do not make assumptions if you cannot back it up with hard facts.

Have you guys ever thought that your teachers wrote you a bad recommendation? That your essay was not adequate enough? Have you ever thought that Emory may feel, based on your transcript, that you did not take the hardest course load possible based on the classes offered at your high school? Have you ever thought Emory may talk to other colleges and universities and see who is applying where? Have you ever thought that Emory may feel as if you may not add anything to your class as a whole?

I can say from experience that Emory do not want complainers or people that doubt the competitiveness of this school. Everyone in my class adds something different and everyone brings a different story, so do not insult the admissions office by saying that the competitiveness went down. And don’t be upset that YOU were not able to make the cut. Just go to another school and do well there and you MAY be able to transfer into Emory.

And for you guys to be talking about this shows how childish you guys are. REAL college students do not care about all of this. They accept what has happened and moved on. My advice: Stop questioning things and move on.

^^Harsh, but true…

Colleges00701, you are a lair. Emory University DOES NOT do interviews.

Proof: [Virtual Advisor](http://emt.askadmissions.net/emory/ask.aspx?did=2&cid=2553&quser=interviews&submit=ask)

Please, kids, stop getting on this forum and lying about SAT/ACT Scores, GPA, and other things. You were not admitted because you WERE not the piece of the puzzle we were looking for.

Murrah: not trying to dispute, but apparently, according to Emory Admissions last year, a new alumni program utilizing interviews was put into place in limited geographic areas (I think last year, Chicago was a pilot city)…

In addition, you implied that Emory has contact with other schools that applicants apply to? If that is true, I’m not sure they would want you telling people that on a public forum.

^^^ I also had an alumni interview on November last year (in San Francisco).

Hello Rod and Siri,

I have done some (inside) research and we do have a PILOT program, but it is not considered yet. They are trying to see if it would change people’s admissions. So, from what I understand, it’s not taken into consideration yet until they have collected data. (Just like the SAT/ACT Writing portions.)

And my second statement still stand to you all…

You’re GPAs may have been that high in HS but some colleges change the scale so everyone is on equal ground.

Hi there Murrah08,

Let’s tone it down a bit. We thank you for bringing your perspective and expertise to this thread. It has been helpful. However, don’t tell everybody to “stop questioning things.” No matter the subject, that is everyone’s right. It is how we learn and grow. Even if sometimes it may seem unnecessary.

Also, when you deal with criticism I suggest you avoid accusatory and/or presumptuous language. ie. “You are a liar” and “…YOU DO NOT DESERVE to be at my University.” This can and already has hurt you, as many of your end-all zingers have been met by legitimate refutation.

And finally, if you review my post I did not, “say that Emory rankings will go down.” I asked a question. Notice my gratuitous use of question marks.

LaVie:

Enough is enough. Stop whining about having been waitlisted despite stellar stats. You say your daughter has moved on, but obviously you have not, and until you do, you will be an anchor around her neck.

It looks like Emory has some real stellar people representing them

^ SPKTRUTH: don’t read me if it’s bother you!! CC is a public site right?i am not impolite or mean( maybe i am not expressing myself like i should because i don’t speak well English… i least i try!) and i try to discuss a "sensitive " subject , which a lot of people agree with me…and i never attacked nobody! and i don’t know who you are but you have only 2 posts and it seems like you just register on CC to attack me! you seems a great person:( very helpfull and compassionate! welcome to CC!!

@Murrah08: Woah, why are you calling me a liar, I was just trying to prove that Emory is really compeitive this year, and they don’t waitlist/reject people because they don’t think people will attend. I didn’t say I deserved to get in, the reason I didn’t get in is because there is something wrong with my application. The only reason I posted my friends stats was to disprove the theory that Emory waitlists/rejects “overqualified” people, because even though he had really high stats, he still got in…I was actually providing evidence to prove your point…Calm down…I never even said Emory was easy to get into, I was TRYING TO CONVINCE PEOPLE ON THIS TREAD, that Emory is REALLY HARD TO GET INTO THIS YEAR…why don’t you read through the entire thread before you go around making accusations…

Quote: “Please, kids, stop getting on this forum and lying about SAT/ACT Scores, GPA, and other things”
Secondly your accusing people of lying about their sat/gpa on this thread. Why would we do that? I was trying to prove that there were things other than Sat/gpa that Emory looks at like, Essays/Recs/Extra Curriculars…By assuming that we were lying about our Sat scores/Gpa(because you are assuming they are high), which is not true at all, you were actually saying that if we had a certain gpa/sat score then Emory would have accepted us, which is completly untrue…

Third: Why would you go on a public forum and say that Emory contacts other schools, to see where else you applied? Were you trying to stop future applicants from applying to Emory? Are you even allowed to be making such claims? I don’t think Emory Admissions would be very pleased with you going on public forums and making bold claims like that…

I did not show any interest, and I got in. Totally unexpected, and I am an average student on CC standard.

As an Emory student, I don’t believe that some of Murrah’s comments accurately reflect the sentiments of the student body, not do I believe they reflect the opinions of the University as a whole.

If you have any question that Emory isn’t a phenomenal place to study and live, please come take a visit and see for yourself. There’s more to any school than what numbers and statistics show. Please, don’t judge Emory because one person decided to write inflammatory (and somewhat elitist) comments on an internet site.

^^^ I agree, Emory is a great place to study…I would do anything to get off Emory’s Waitlist and go…Damn I want to attend this school so badly!!!..I have heard from current students there that the campus is really, really nice, and theres a lot to do on campus for fun…

All of you who didn’t get into Emory, or who are wait listed at Emory or another top 20 school, need to chillax and stop whinining. There are reasons why you weren’t accepted and all of your moaninnig won’t make those reasons go away. You simply weren’t deemed worthy of acceptance. Get over it and move on. Take a gap year or accept your safety and stop bogging down these websites with your mindless “I’m better than they are drivel”.

lol I like how you put “drivel” in the quotation marks. Also, the period is supposed to be inside the quotes.

Seagal: Unfortunately, you are wrong. The quotation marks in my post were in fact at the correct place. Check you rules of grammar.

Actually periods always go inside the quotation marks, so I believe my grammar is correct. And since you put “drivel” in quotes, that means that the people who are complaining are saying “drivel” rather than you saying that their complaints are drivel. I wasn’t wait listed from Emory, I got into their Oxford College.

LaVie: The word “Compassion” only applies to those who can appreciate it. You are so wrapped up in your perception of you and your your daughter having been wronged that you are incapable of rationally responding to any posts. Also, are you a parent or a student? Make up your mind.
