Well, I decided to enroll at the University of Pennsylvania and am thinking very hard about entering dentistry (or medicine). I am in a dual degree program at Penn where I get a biological basis of behavior degree from the CAS and an econ degree from Wharton. Plus, the school hooks me up with two good internships (one business and one science). However, I am paying 25k a year to attend Penn. So, will being in this program at Penn give my potential dental/med app a boost? Moreover, are the business skills learned at Wharton vital (or almost vital) to being successful as a private practice dentist?

IMO, 25K is a bargain for Penn’s Wharton program.

Yes, I am pretty sure med schools respect Wharton’s greatness. lol.

Many of the private practice doctors I know, told me to major in economics, because when you are trying to run 3-4 of your own clinics, having a good business sense is necessary. =)

Dude! I’m possibly pre-dent as well and am in another Wharton dual degree program. Idk…I think it is a good choice. I chose Wharton for two reasons:

Wharton will give me the business skills needed to establish successful private practice (and enable me to make bank doing something I truly love)

I’m not set on dentistry (as I’m only a college frosh)…Wharton lets me rock banking/consulting too!

Awesome program at Penn. The only possible downside is that Wharton is notorious for grade toughness; thus, you’ll work your behind off in both finance and chem. As for preparing you to setup practice, no B-school will give you much there, unless you focus on entrepreneurship. After all, a doc is nothing but a solo-businessperson. Not saying that the background won’t be useful, but don’t expect much unless you want to go into management, such as in hospital, insurance, HMO, etc.

hey haha I’m also interested in going to wharton for healthcare management or finance. but my ultimate goal is med school in the end. I know your GPA matters a LOT in med school admission, and since Wharton is notorious about grades… would it be better to go to a different school?
