I was admitted to Penn and Caltech this year, as a junior, but thinking I would just leave for college as opposed to staying another year, my grades sunk, evidenced by my lower GPA. I can still raise it through a strong senior year-I signed up for All AP classes, which I can get strong As in. I chose Penn this year and deferred admission. I did Harvard EA-deferred-then, waitlist.

But, what school would give me the best chance of success for Early. My GPA dropped too much for the elite Ivys, but I still want to aim high. I’m thinking UChic EA, Wash U ED, Cornell ED. Chances? Other schools? Thanks for the input.

Although you have steller standardized test scores, your GPA is very average. A 4.3 w gpa is very good, but an 3.3 uw is…quite low. The schools that you are shooting for would like to see an uw gpa of 3.5 or (preferably) higher. Most competitive applicants at schools such as WashU will have uw gpas above 3.6/3.7.

In addition, there is a lg. discrepency between your sat scores and gpa. This will make colleges think that you are an underachiever.

My advice is to bring up that GPA… good luck

I see what you mean, but I noticed the large EA/ED acceptences this year and percentage wise by both schools. Would applying EA/ED to either school heighten my chances. Does my going to RSI influence anything?

umm… im sure the other applicants with a 3.6/3.7 havnt had their research published nor are they so accomplished (by what you say) in a musical talent.

I don’t get it…you’re going to Penn, but want to know your chances at these schools?

Anyways, Chicago is all about the impression you make on them with your recs and essays. Seriously, several kids on this board with stats similar to yours were rejected and/or waitlisted this year.

how very interesting, I’ve never heard of some 17- indian kid playing at carnegie hall. and believe me, I do keep up with their events. But you know, if you really are as amazing you claim to be up there, your chances are good, even though you strike me as being artificial.

Um, is there any reason to lie on these posts? It wasn’t like I was invited to play there. I won a regional competition that was part of a national feeder. The six regionalists played at Carnegie Hall. I have a friend in my school who played there when she was in 8th grade. Obviously, she wasn’t professional level-neither am I. But, she won a competition that allowed her to play there.

No, I applied to colleges this year to see where I would get in, and be able to commit to a place. I still want to explore options and see where else I could go because Penn is not my ideal place. If you want the full story IM me.

By deferring admission, aren’t you making a commitment to attend?

I’m actually curious myself–I also applied a year early to UChicago (just there, to test the waters), got in, and am deferring my acceptance…and my grades have improved SIGNIFICANTLY this semester (+5%) from my overall average…so I’m wondering if maybe I should apply at Penn (Wharton is my ideal school) and a few other ivies just for the hell of it…and maybe if I get in, I could withdraw from Chicago…

Yeah, you can do that. I told Penn I would go in the excitement of going, though. I really want to go to UChicago and am going to apply there Early. Any chance we could talk thru email or AIM?

Wow, you are a really exceptional person… 11 AP tests is gigantic. Such great musical talent. How do you find time? You will definitely be getting into those schools. Maybe even scholarships to them? Why not the top ivies? You can really make it.
