Any advice about affording tuition at Wash U? Top student, works hard and plays hard. Looking for a school with same spirit. Middle class family probably won’t get much for need, but can’t foot $50,000/yr. Any successful strategies? Any particular scholarships/grants recommended? How does admissions respond to honest conversation about $$$?

What are the stats ?

Datadriven: 11th grader, top 5% of class, 3.8 unweighted GPA, 36 ACT, 1540 SAT (2290 w/writing), 3 SAT Subj tests - all 750+, enriched and AP coursework throughout.

Good candidate for merit $. Show a lot of interest, write great essays and you are very likely to get at least half-tuition.

mom616 - Your child’s stats are almost identical to my D’s, and she was admitted, but without receiving one of the big scholarships. Please remember, as is posted on another thread, that there are many amazing kids applying for those, and don’t feel disappointed if your child doesn’t get one. My D applied to Wash U mainly because there was a chance at a scholarship, but after visiting and being accepted, decided it was the best fit for her even without one. Our financial situation is similar to yours as well, but the FA department worked with us on some special circumstances for our family. Also D had to make the choice to work in college and graduate with some debt, as opposed to a debt-free UC education.
So my recommendation would be to apply, write great essays, and hope for the best. But don’t write the school off if the scholarships don’t come through, it might work out anyway!

what are her interests? there are full tuition scholaships by deptartment. if she is a minority, even better… there are full tuition scholarships for that too.

I’ve never heard of scholarship for minorities, merit scholarships are open to everyone.

The Ervin used to be a minority Scholar program till 3 years ago. It is now open to everyone.

WashU can be very generous to kids it really wants. Just remember the scholarship/Scholars programs at WashU are very competetive - every scholarship applicant will have top stats, ECs, community service & recomendations. So you have to stand out from that group. That being said, there are ways of doing this.

Most of the WashU scholarships are listed on their website. http://admissions.wustl.edu/admissio...set=iso-8859-1

Either use the above link or look on the website. There is one Scholars program not listed - Danforth Scholars. The students GC must nominate the student for this - it can be either a 1/2 or full tuition scholarship. Nominations are due early fall of senior year & GC can get forms from admissions office. All of these scholarships require a separate appliction and most involve a Scholars Interview Weekend in March - that semi finalists are invited to attend all expenses paid.
