I usually only run the washer and dryer when at home. Admittedly I will go out to do yardwork when they are running.
Our Maytag washer/dryer set died in 2019 right before the pandemic. We had a hard time finding anything, but were able to get a Speed Queen washer/dryer. Both appliances work well and don’t have lots of bells and whistles–temperature choices, time choices, water temp, quick start. Can’t turn it on remotely or control through the internet. I’m happy with it. We got side-by-side models that were about $4K.
Visited my niece at her new apartment this weekend.
Her stacking washer and dryer is in the walk in closet in between the bathroom and bedroom. Small space but so convenient. Laundry done right where you put it away!
My daughter’s 4! Story townhome, the laundry room is on the 3rd floor. The one that has the guest room and office. So inconvenient. So little laundry goes on that floor.
We have a first floor laundry which is where our primary bedroom is. It’s a perfect location.
Our full size washer dryer is in our kitchen, which is very convenient location. It’s good to be able to keep an eye on things while doing food prep, etc. It has a deep since beside the washer that i’d also conveniently in the kitchen — we can use it for food prep and or cleaning.

We bought our new Speed Queens Wednesday afternoon and they were delivered Thursday morning. With the gas hook up and vent the dryer was about 1/4 inch too deep and we couldn’t quite get laundry closet door closed. A trip to Home Depot and a $4 part to change the angle of the gas connection and all is well.
Are you still happy with your washer?
I suspect we will need a new one very soon and it’s a contender.
Why SQ front loader as opposed to top loader? I see front loader is much more expensive. I have had a top loader for over a decade and have thought I want to go back to top load next time, but maybe I’m missing something?
Yes, just finished four loads of laundry today. It’s basic but does the job well. I especially like that it somehow manages to fix itself if a load gets unbalanced.
Just my personal preference. I wash a lot of delicates so need a washer that would be gentle on them but can also handle a king size comforter. Plus our space is configured for a front loader. Also, front loaders can spin at a higher speed making drying faster.
I think that is one of their design features- self-balancing. ![]()

Just fixed a timer on our 28 year old frigadaire washer. Lol.
The reality is most of the washers internally are pretty much the same. You can pay for Wi-Fi and lots of other fun things that will end up breaking. For those with older appliances hit me up and I will tell you where to get the parts even those software controllers/ computer board things. Many repair people just want you to buy a new one. No question the newer stuff only last like 10 years or so. Never was like this before. Most fixes take like less then 30 minutes and most on you tube.
We have our washer out side our bedroom upstairs. When we built the house this was done on purpose. It has its own room. Like a decent size walk in closet
I bought an old Kenmore washer/dryer used 20 years ago. It was the best appliance set I ever owned. (15 years). I’ve had my new Kenmore washer for 5 years. It already had one major repair. My fault for buying an appliance from a company going out of business when I could’ve gone to Best Buy. The Kenmore fridge I bought had a compressor go out after 4 years. We opted to fix it, and the NEW compressor went out a year later, so we bought a new one…but that’s a bit off topic ![]()
Kenmore is kind of a virtual brand whose products are manufactured by other companies like Whirlpool, LG, Panasonic, etc…
Washer is dead - parts aren’t even available. After a fair amount of research including calling some independent appliance stores and visiting one, I’m pretty sure we are going with the Speed Queen TR7 model of washer. According to the person I spoke with at build.com, it has over 2400 reviews with an average of 4.7 - he said that was “amazing.”
I will be frustrated every time I walk into the laundry area, bc my washer and dryer won’t match, but I can’t justify getting a new dryer just because of that.

My washer and dryer have been mismatched for close to 20 years now. Even now, when both washer and dryer are white with electronic controls made by SQ, the look of the touch pad control panels is a little different. Doesn’t bother me. I would not replace a dryer that works well just to have a match. I would replace it if it wasn’t doing a good job (like my previous one).
Lol. Got a model number and what your looking for
…?? I have heard this over and over and I still come up with the parts. Lol
I recommend buying your new appliances now if you need them. That’s all I will say.
Washer had already been ordered and paid for when I saw your note. We wouldn’t fix it ourselves, and were OK with getting a new one.
