Just figured I’d report that our new Speed Queen top loader washer (TR7) has been working fine. My son came by soon after we got it, and he said “that looks like an old fashioned washer.” I do put more things in mesh bags to wash that I did with the front loader. It’s a lot smaller than the front load washer I had and dryer I still have. I will buy the TR7 dryer if/when our current one dies. (It’s probably 15 or more years old, but when we had it under a warranty they replaced the main board or whatever, so I can only hope it keeps working for years.
My SQ front loader works great so far. Not as great as the old Miele but still great. Can wash a single bra in it or a king sized comforter if I wanted to. ![]()
I did not reach through the 163 above posts.
Has anyone purchased or used the new washer/dryer one unit machines? One piece, does both jobs.
My neighbor is getting her laundry moved upstairs and this is what she is getting. We hope to do the same in a year or so. Figured we’d be looking at stackable but I’m curious about these new Magic models. ![]()
We had an LG combo washer/dryer in our row house in Baltimore because that is all that would fit upstairs. I hated it. It took forever to wash/dry a load and the clothes kind of smelled funny after the cycle. I also had to be very careful that everything in the load could go through the dryer cycle. Honestly I wouldn’t recommend unless there is no other option.
Yeah, I’m perfectly happy for my neighbor to be the guinea pig. :). A good friend of hers works at the local appliance place and seems to know her stuff so I’’m hoping that technology has improved with newer models.
Ok the forum has decided to be wonky
Would you keep the other washer and dryer? I think a combo unit would be great on the second floor if there was a backup. Maybe your laundry is in the basement?
I think the combo is popular in Europe where space is an issue. I’d still like to have separate units just in case there’s a lot of laundry or to do delicate items. Or to wash bulk items because I’m not sure how big a combo would be.
Do you know if you can choose to just use the washer on some loads? I hang many of my clothes to dry, so having everything go through dryer would be a big “no” for me.
But to answer your question, I don’t know anyone who has one of these models.
Yes you can chose to just do the wash cycle and the newer units can pause between cycles. My issue was that the cycles were so much longer than my traditional pair that I felt like I couldn’t leave the house when we were running laundry. That and the funny off smell after the dryer cycle (and our dryer sensor was not accurate so most of the time stuff was still damp).
Our laundry is in the basement. If we move it up to a planned renovated bathroom we can basically live on the main floor.
My neighbor says that it can wash a comforter - can’t remember if she said queen or king.
To be honest I know nothing about them and the question of can you pause between wash and dry is a great question I hadn’t thought of!
I’m someone who doesn’t do much special with laundry, using all the different cycles and such….
We have a new one in the ADU (granny flat) at D’s. It is good for underwear and t-shirts. The load has to be the same thickness of materials. There was no room for other options. It took like 3.5 hours and really not user friendly.
In France in our air B&B we had a washer only and hang dry clothes indoors. I liked that better.
Well that sounds terrible! I saw my neighbor have hers delivered this afternoon….i will zip my mouth!
Our newish LG Washtower is great! Not cheap but we are really liking it.
Is that a one piece unit??
@abasket do you require a one piece unit? If not, look at stacking front loader washers and dryers. My MIL has one that is sort of in a hall closet. My sister has one in her utility room. Both are very happy with them.
Stacking takes up the same floor space as a single unit. Unless the room configuration requires a single unit to be installed under a counter, I’d opt for stacking two feature-full single-purpose units. We will be installing this stackable when we reno the lower-level laundry in our cabin this summer. We’ve stacked the washer and dryer in every house we’ve lived in since we married as I prioritize floor space first.
I don’t require a one unit but apparently my neighbor did or chose to get that upon recommendation of her friend. I just had no knowledge of this option which is why I looked for the “10-4” from this group here on CC!
We don’t have a bathroom Reno blueprint yet but I suspect we will be ok to have stackables. Was just keeping my mind open at this point! The jury seems to be saying don’t go for this option and those points taken.
But also admittedly, I’m not going to spend too much brainpower on my W/D choices. Just want my clothes to get washed and dried and be reliable!
My in-laws had a one piece combo BUT it was in Switzerland in an apartment. Apparently they’re common there due to space. But I’m not sure the same brands are even made for sale in this country. My MILs biggest gripe was that really, the wash load was not very big.
@BunsenBurner do you know?
Some people only have cabana boys…
I edited…meant LOAD.
