Watching Football during AC Year

I know that there are TV tuners in the computers that are issued, but the channel choices are very limited. Are Plebes even allowed to utilize the TV tuners at all during the Academic Year?

Also, are football games allowed to be watched during the year as Plebes, either on our own computers or in the Ward Room?

Finally, if allowed, would this only be on Saturday liberty that you could watch football games, or would Sunday/Monday Night football games be allowed too?

unless you have a media chit, or your training officer gives you permission, you can’t watch tv in the hall…period. that’s how it was in my company, realize that things do vary.however, media chits are really the only way. watch tv at your sponsors: the only time we used the tv tuners was during the super bowl.

edit: sunday/monday night football games are really out.

Furthermore,
Most companies DO NOT allow plebes to use the company wardroom until around spring break (again this varies, especially for certain events). Media chits, for entertainment purposes, are usually not given until 2nd semester…chits given by professors (ONLY for academic purposes) are allowed. Media chits, for entertainment purposes, need to be approved by the training sergeant and/or training officer and company commander.

kinda off topic: I know wardrooms have huge TVs/comfy couches (at least the one I saw in 11th Company I think), but don’t they also have kitchenette areas (microwave, food that the plebes had to help unload, etc)? Are all those things off limits until Spring Break as well? My mom really really wants to send me popcorn…shrugs

I think plebes can use the fridge/freezer and kitchen…but that might be on a company-by-company basis. I would find out from the Training Staff/Company Commander/Wardroom Officer when the Ac Year starts.

At the risk of sounding overly harsh (not the intent), I suggest you forget about football and concentrate on studying. You can read about the games in the paper, and you’ll need to anyway as part of your basic daily rates (is it still 2 front-page articles and 1 sports article?).

Forget about using the wardroom, microwave, or whatever. You’re putting the cart before the horse. You will quickly find (and I wonder if the TRUE quote is still in the catalog), that USNA is a place where they take away all your-God-given rights and then give them back to you slowly over the next four years as priveleges.

I didn’t set foot in my company wardoom Plebe Year except for one or two meetings. While each company may be different, don’t get ahead of yourself.

Ah! Post 1987! A VERY good year! :D

My purpose of asking wasn’t to sound like I had any hopes of living a “normal” life Plebe year. I know basically everything is taken away and you aren’t allowed to have a life. However, I was just wondering what little freedoms, if any, we did get. Being from Green Bay, it would be nice to keep up with the Packers ;). Wheelah makes it sound like she at least got to watch a part of the Super Bowl…even that small privilege or other small privileges like that are the things I am wondering about…

Sure, you have rights!

You have the right to breath and, uh… Uh…

Hold on a minute…

Uh…

Actually, that’s it. ;)

I must admit that, as a football addict, I REALLY missed watching games. In my day, no TV for plebes (other than at sponsors’ house) for the whole year. Youngster year, we could watch in the wardroom on WEs only – but there was one TV for about 100 people, so compromise was key.

On the plus side, you “get” to attend all Navy home games. :)

BTW, the reason they don’t let plebes watch TV is two-fold. One, privileges are earned. Over time. Two, as Zaphod said, plebes need to study on the WEs. They really do. Not all WE, every WE, but some every WE.

One suggestion – have your parents or friends tape the games and you can watch them on leave. I KNOW it’s not the same as watching them live, but if there is a really great game or play or whatever, at least you’ll have the chance to see it at some point. Ditto with your favorite TV shows (if any).

recognize that this is in my company-experience, but i’m pretty sure its brigade-wide…plebes are allowed to use the kitchen part of the wardroom.
also, my company let us watch the whole super bowl, whether in our rooms on our computers or on on the wardroom tv. but 4th was pretty relaxed about media, and i know some friends had a hellacious time trying to get media chits. but don’t worry: odds are your sponsors would tape things for you (mine taped three of my favorite shows each week), and you do still have to know a sports article everyday…so it’s not entirely a black hole.

Can you say TIVO? :)
