Watching SNL 40th reunion?

No they didnt do floor wax.
I did watch the tribute but it went by so fast I must have blinked during Don Pardos tribute even though he was the announcer since the beginning.
Imo, if it wasnt for the strenght of the first 5 years, SNL wouldn’t be around today in its current permutation, so I wish they had spent more time on the original cast, although I do like the current group.

I was trying to explain some of the great musical guests they had back in the 70s and 80s to my husband since he didn’t grow up here. Talking Heads and Van Morrison came to mind
I felt embarrassed for Paul McCartney…I guess his vocal chords have aged .
My best friend was texting me about our memories of watching SNL. I recently visited the mom of one of my childhood best friends and she dug out some old pictures of us. There was one of the three of us after we had exchanged Christmas presents. I had given one of them Steve Martin’s " Let’s Get Small " album

Dan Akroyd’s rendition of his bassomatic didn’t work, which IMO added an ironic touch. Never liked the Californians so agree a new rendition was not necessary. Emma Stone’s rendition of Roseanne Rosannadanna was excellent. I miss Gilda Radner.

I actually thought Paul McCartney was great. Have seen some reviews, saying he was " raw" “passionate”, that the song was “simple and heartwarming.” I thought the Jeopardy skit was very funny and actually thought the Californians was pretty funny too but I guess it doesn’t take much to amuse me! Enjoyed Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake at the beginning, also Maya Rudolph as Beyoncé, and always have loved anything to do with cowbells!

Bass-O-Matic fan here!

Agreed that they whizzed through too many clips. Never fail to laugh at Sean Connery in Jeopardy. Would have like to have heard more about the hosts, particularly the unusual hosts such as politicians (Julian Bond was funny, to me). Liked the Seinfeld Q&A with the hosts in the audience, especially Michael Douglas.

We all must have notices how McCartney’s hair was grey in the Chris Farley interview, but jet black last night.

Was Billy Crystal included at all?! I missed the first 15 minutes. Can’t imagine how he got neglected. I completely agree about the rushing through the skits. Normally I find the Californians amusing but last nights sketch was a force.

My 23 year old D was watching it and texturing me. She loved the whole show.

Billy Crystal was on during the first few minutes.

The man still puts on dozens of concerts a year where he does a pre-show that consists of about a dozen songs, and then does a full 3 hours / about 36 songs, ranging from ballads to Helter Skelter without so much as taking a drink of water. It’s not as though he just came out of retirement or anything to sing. Since I can’t imagine anyone tells him what he should or should not sing, it was just a poor choice (IMO) to choose one of his hardest-to-sing-songs-of-all-times. I did hear that he had a sore throat, but it’s not like he couldn’t change at the last minute. His band certainly knows his full catalog inside and out.

On his latest album, there are some songs where he deliberately “exploits” (for lack of a better term) his aging voice – you can hear it quavering and it adds to the poignancy of the song. “Early Days” is the best example of that.

Have the show recorded…will watch later but wanted to add an interesting tidbit…I was listening to NPR the other day and they were talking about the people that Lorne Michaels interviewed and regretted not hiring - Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert!

Jane Curtin looks terrific, and is still the perfect Weekend Update anchor. And I loved her line: “I used to be the only pretty blonde woman reading the fake news on TV … now there’s a whole network devoted to that. And somehow I showed less cleavage.”

Melissa McCarthy as Chris Farley’s Matt Foley character - genius. That woman is an amazing talent.

“Lorne Michaels interviewed and regretted not hiring - Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert!”

Isn’t Colbert in the “Ambiguously Gay Duo” sketches?

Since this is a college board, I would be remiss in noting that there’s one college whose theater department has by far the largest # of SNL alumni. Ha ha ha!

Also Lisa Kudrow and Jim Carrey…

@Pizzagirl‌ maybe he did that while hosting?

I’d give it a mixed review. I laughed at the Bill Murray rendition of the Jaws “love song,” and enjoyed the Adam Sandler songs, Steven Martin, Jerry Seinfeld and seeing so many of the old cast members together again. I liked the Paul McCartney/Paul Simon collaboration. The make out session between Bradley Cooper and Betty White was too funny.

I agree that some of the skits, i.e. Californians, went on and on at the expense of some of the more classic bits from years ago. Eddie Murphy’s appearance was kind of awkward. I think there was some glitch there. And spare me all the attention given to Kanye. I got tired of the multiple references to him storming the stage and that song at the end was bizarre.

Also, what is up with Chevy Chase? His whole speech pattern is different. Hope he’s OK.

I thought the Californians was one of those stupid sketches where you turn to your partner midway through and say - remember when this show used to be good? It was thoroughly stupid, IMO.

And Chevy Chase looks just awful. He did NOT age well, at all. It makes me wonder if he had a stroke? Sad - he was really a gifted comic in his day.

I felt like the paul simon tribute - his and mile’s song were because lorne michaels worked with him on the paul simons special? I admit I missed the beginning of the show. I had the usual mixed feelings about the skits but loved some of the great ones . I also loved some of the commercials (given that I rarely watch TV they were different) The subaru dogs was funny.
Also I wonder if lorne michaels is retiring. Yes that aging of some of the actors was interesting and a little sad- makes me feel really older.

I always feel bad for the aging rockers who can’t hit the notes anymore. In the early fall, Fleetwood Mac was performing on Rockefeller Plaza during the Today Show…social media chewed them up and spit them out. I was worried because I had tickets to see them with all of my daughters , sister and niece. But they managed just fine. They somehow worked around their inability to get their vocals to where they once were…but Lindsay Buckingham made up for Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie…he still has it, voice and all

I would love to have seen Fleetwood Mac, but not for what tickets would be, Pearl Jam spoils me.

We saw Paul McCartney in 2013 with what’s left of Nirvana, and I have to say, Paul keeps up with Dave Grohl, no problem. He only sat down to play keyboards/piano, and compared to the Stevie Wonder show we saw in December, it was much tighter although McCartney is definitely rock, whereas Wonder is more poppy jazz, but I would have liked more energy. H loved both, I’m a bit harder sell, but McCartney was great, & you didn’t even have to add " for his age", as a qualifier.

I didn’t remember Jack Nicholson on SNL, ( not that I remember the '70’s) Did he ever host?

Hope the Paul Simon finale shows up someplace…I guess I should have watched that last half hour.

Did they do any cone heads stuff?

And the point/counterpoint woth Jane Curtin and Dan Ackroyd…that would have been hilarious as a current event!

Just watched Paul Simon on Hulu. He was fabulous!
