Way to combine music & sports in a major or career?

My d has 2 very different passions: music (drumline) and athletics (swimming primarily, but has participated in several other sports.)

She has been successful in both areas and unfortunately as she’s begun looking at colleges/universities, she’s convinced herself that she has to choose between the 2 areas for a major, and ultimately – a career. And this depresses her…

Any ideas or suggestions on how she could combine the two passions (don’t care how crazy it may seem at this point.)

We need to get her to start thinking “outside the box” and thought someone here might have some ideas on where to look.

Thanks in advance.

She could become a music teacher who does marching band in the fall and coaches swimming in the winter. I don’t think you major in any kind of coaching, but at IU they have “HPER” classes that teach basics of coaching in general and basics of coaching for individual sports, so I bet other schools will have them too.

… There’s a major in sports?

Yeah, I don’t know what you’re talking about in terms of majoring in sports… coaching? physical therapy? I don’t think there’s a way to incorporate both music and sports into one career, other than the off-chance happening of what DiamondDave said. She should decide on a career, and then a hobby or part-time job. Also, she shouldn’t worry yet. She’s not even in college. Things can change big time once she’s actually in college, and she doesn’t need to declare a major yet.

If I were a betting man, I would say your d isn’t going to be interested in majoring in something with music and sports once she gets out of high school.

A lot of us are passionate about sports or marching band or the glee club or whatever it is in high school. That doesn’t mean it’s passion that should transfer into adulthood.

If it does, then she should probably study music education and work as a coach at the school at which she is employed.
