Ways to make myself a stronger candidate?

Hi Everyone!

I am a current Junior in high school who is seriously considering pursuing a career in film. I know that a film major is not the most practical route, but at the moment I’m heavily leaning towards it.

I have about a 3.94 UW GPA. I got a 33 on the ACT and a 2110 on the SAT.

For classes, I have taken all honors and APs. I got on the a 5 on the APUSH exam my Sophomore year. I haven’t taken this year’s AP tests yet, but I took the classes AP Spanish, AP government, and AP English language. For Senior year, I am taking AP economics, AP physics (calculus based), AP Calculus BC, and AP European History. I am also going to be the editor in chief of my school newspaper (which has been nationally awarded).

As far as film itself, I hate to say that I have only recently began heavily pursuing it as a hobby. I love to cook, so I have filmed, edited, cooked for, and personally scored cooking videos and put them on Youtube (this is an ongoing project). I know that these aren’t any short films or anything, but I work hard on the cinematography and I think that the final products reflect that. I am also very into food photography and am currently working on designing my own food blog.

I want to focus on screenwriting and I am currently working on a screenplay, but I know that it won’t be completed by the time I apply and that this specific information is probably irrelevant.

The colleges that I would most like to attend are NYU (Tische), Northwestern University, USC, UCLA, and Columbia. Please note that I chose these schools for their prestigious film programs, but I am open to other schools as well.

Tische is my [most likely unrealistic] dream, and I have researched their creative application. While I am certain that I can write some good essays, I’m afraid that my rather unimpressive list of film experiences will be a major detractor from my application.

What can I do in the next months to strengthen myself as a candidate for some of these programs? What are my chances as is? I know that the application process is incredibly objective, but I think it could somewhat ease my anxiety if I could just get some input.

I have never had so much passion for anything as much as for film and storytelling. I want to share stories and gain insight into the nature of humanity through working with other incredible creative minds.

Thank you so much for any responses!
