My husband and I retired and moved from VA to PA in October 2010. My son attends a VA state college, so when we left he moved in with his dad (in VA). I’m doing the FAFSA because he lived with us most of the year and we provided the vast majority of his support (ex will do the FAFSA next year).

Will it cause a problem if the number of college students living with the parents between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012 is zero? Will the EFC be higher? I don’t think the school will try to charge OOS tuition because there is a one-year grace period, plus my son’s permanent address is now his dad’s house.

You’re right–I just entered 0 and got an error message. Do I enter 1, even though my son won’t be living with us during that time? Will I get another error message because our address isn’t the same as his permanent address?

I don’t think so. My son had lived away from home for several years before he returned to school so his address was different to ours. Though actually I can’t remember if we just went ahead and put our address down.

You can legitimately use your income on the FAFSA because he lived with you the most within the past 12 months. While he no longer lives with you, he is in your “household” for the school year, so it is 1 in college (and you include him in the number in household, as well). Addresses are not a problem - but do use his current address for HIM.
