"Weak" majors

tenisighs: Your average should not be a barrier to becoming admitted to a fine graduate school. Just do well on the GRE .

Sakky, what’s your opinion of Columbia as a vehicle for getting into the elite law schools? How does it compare to HYPS? (Is there as much grade inflation, etc.?)

Columbia is obviously not as good as HYPS, which are obviously the premier pathways to the top law schools. But it’s still very good. The grade inflation is about the same as the other Ivies you mentioned (exception - the Columba Fu School of EAS).

Do you think Columbia’s lower position as a pathway to the top law schools is a function of its student body (less students apply, overall student body is not as talented) or its reputation (or something else)?

Both.

But on the bright side, it’s probably better than, say, MIT in terms of getting oneself into a good law school. MIT is more selective and has a better reputation, but the coursework is so demanding and the grades that much lower that on the whole, I think MIT is probably a worse place than Columbia for getting oneself into a top law school. It’s just very very hard to get the top grades that law schools demand if you go to MIT.
