andrw313- demonstrated interested definitely killed me. plus I applied at the last possible minute. oh emory…

denied at yale, definitely not a weak school
and waitlisted at northwestern, which is sorta surprising because it seems everyone going to duke who applied there was accepted, i’m from chicago, but hate it, so maybe that hatred seeped through my essays (i hated those 50 word “essays”)

I loved those 50 word essays! They were fun and made me think. Even though I love Duke, Northwestern’s app was way cooler.

northwestern’s app ****ed me off so i didn’t apply because i was too lazy

All my schools were pretty tough to get into…but I guess I was waitlisted at WUSTL and Brown. All the schools I was flat out rejected are tougher to get into than Duke.

u liked the 50 word essays??? wasn’t one of them somethig like “if you could bring together two people from two different time periods and have them discuss any issue, who would they be and what would they discuss” (maybe its just me, but how can u fully answer that question, who you’re bringing, why them, what they’re to discuss, why,) i guess i can sorta agree northwestern’s app was kinda more interesting, only because i used the common app for duke

I liked the NU app mainly because when I was accepted, I felt like they accepted me, and not just my scores. but enough about that…GO DUKE!!! lol

Rejected at Stanford. Accepted at Duke and WashU. I guess WashU was kindof my backup because I work there and felt confident about getting in…but whatever Go Duke

Waitlisted at Brown, Cornell, Northwestern, and GW. The first two are understandable, but the last 2… ***??? especially GW… well I can give two reasons for the last two; I applied for the Combined Medical Programs at both, and my essays kinda blew for the “Why us?” Still, I don’t get it… it’s GWU for crying out loud… I mean, I got into Duke, Rice, Berkeley, JHU and Boston University Accelerated Medical Program! Haha, oh well… doesn’t matter.

UC Sandiego! I was so mad since I had rescinded my application anyways. I got into Tufts and UC Berkeley (didn’t get my letters of rescind) so I don’t know why SD didn’t pan out.

NU HPME is one of the hardest things to get into. I know someone who turned down YPM and duke for it

GW actually has the “Tufts Syndrome” as well. Key giveaway “Waitlist”. They waitlist anyone over a 1450SAT it seems.

Not true. I mean, that may have been the reason for the waitlisting of some people you know, but the idea that they waitlist people with over a 1450 SAT or people who are qualified enough to get into Duke, etc. is false on both counts.

It was Tufts Syndrome to the nth degree… my friend who got into Wharton (UPenn), Dartmouth, Brown, USC BS/MD, Case Western Reserve BS/MD, Regents at UCLA got waitlisted at GW.

Okay…that may be true for your friend…all I’m saying is that they don’t do that for everyone. Trust me. Personal experience.

I guess the trick is really just to act like you love the school, regardless of whether or not you actually do (or even know anything about it). Worked for me. All that “Tufts Syndrome” might actually be is an lackluster attempt on the applicant’s part to even seem like they like the school at all. It’s not an insult, so please don’t take it that way, but I do know of plenty of people who did that with their safeties when they had other schools they really loved for which they were working on the applications.

GW’s Combined Med program is actually extremely selective. It has nothing to do with “Tufts Syndrome.”

That is true, but admissions to the undergrad itself is not, which is what we (my friend and i were waitlisted for)

Yes, if you get into Duke you are “overqualified” for GW by most standards…but I’d think they’d dole out scholarships instead of waitlisting…

Yeah…that’s what happened to me.

They DO have the tufts syndrome (just undertgrad). Everything I have heard anecdotally seems to confirm this.
