I am just curious, among people accepted to Duke, what is the lowest regarded school that rejected you? As I consider the University of Wisconsin my safety next year when I apply to Duke, I am just curious how weak of a school someone who was accepted to Duke has been denied from. Sorry it is kind of a wordy question but please respond!

hmm well I got waitlisted at Macalester… which isn’t a weak school but I was slightly suprised. My essays weren’t good and I think they could sense that I really wasn’t that interested in going at least in comparison to other schools… so good job by their admissions people! because even if I hadn’t gotten into Duke I wouldn’t have gone there (not to bring it down… its a sweet school).

I’m not really a good example, so I won’t say mine, but I’m just going to issue out a general warning on schools like Tufts and WashU. Those are the only 2 I know of like this, but there might be others - those schools are often the “safeties” of people applying to Ivies/Stanford/Duke/MIT/Caltech/etc. and they know it, so if you don’t express a lot of interest, visit, let them know you really like them, etc. you are very likely to be WLed or rejected. I knew about this beforehand so I was good about visiting them both and expressing a lot of interest, but people I know who didn’t do this were actually screwed over when they were WLed at these 2 schools and then…rejected from everywhere else. Luckily it worked out in the end, but that’s just my warning. Those definitely aren’t “weak” schools, it’s just a heads up.

Lol I have to respond to this one because I guess my situation fits the bill. I got accepted to Duke this year (I’m going to attend Rice, however - toughest choice ever), yet anyhow, I got rejected by the University of Michigan as an out-of-stater. I sorta considered UMich a safety with my stats, but it was kind of a surprise when I got flat out rejected. However, it was the last place to send me the decision so I wasn’t too bummed out. I don’t really know what you hope to find in this thread – other than simply that different colleges are looking for different things, and luck is certainly a factor!

waitlist at JHU

Mine was Georgetown SFS – not weak at all, but just didn’t pan out.

Oh, wait…I just realized that since the OP is trying to find out if safeties are likely to reject him, I actually am a good example…I feel like I’m bragging, which I hate, but the weakest would have to be…my rejection from Penn, I guess. Once again, totally not weak at all, but yeah.

mine was georgetown, too…

Wharton…the one place I would’ve gone to over Duke.

well i was rejected from HYPMS, got into duke, gtown sfs, northwestern, uchicago, dartmouth, all the UCs. my safety was UCLA/berkeley, and I got in.

Hmm…mine isn’t really a good example or anything because Duke and Emory were the only big names I applied to, but I got WLed then rejected from Emory…not at all weak but whatever.

Well, Loveduke22, I find that somewhat surprisng because I hold Duke in much higher regard than Emory. However, I have heard that Emory is big on demonstrated interest which maybe you did not demonstrate.

doesn’t count I guess…but the only school I was rejected from was Yale…but hey, I wan’t alone lol

Probably Georgetown, which definitely isn’t a weak school. I’ve heard people who’ve gotten in Yale getting rejected from Gtown, which sounded pretty strange.

I was rejected from Princeton. That’s it.

I was rejected from Berkeley and waitlisted at Penn…

Weakest would be Brown or Cornell

Son’s was Georgetown SFS.

I got rejected from Harvard and MIT. Waitlisted at Princeton. Got in at Duke, CMU, UVA, and University of Florida Honors.

Deferred, waitlisted, and rejected at Georgetown (MSB).

Waitlisted (didn’t stay on) at Claremont Mckenna. I found it a bit surprising. Maybe they realized what I had realized, I wouldn’t have been a good fit.
