Whats the weather at Tufts like? Is it cool/cold for most of the year?

Four seasons. Winter can get a little rough, but if you have the right clothes, it doesn.t matter. Spring and fall are gorgeous. And summer can get a little hot.

Where are you from? That will help frame the discussion.

long island.

Tufts is no worse than what you’re used to. Maybe a little bit more snow, if you’re right now very close to the coast (and all of LI is . . . ), but nothing dramatically different.

hey,
i’m a freshman who is from huntington station, long island and i can tell you that the weather here isn’t much worse than at home. I think on average it’s about 8 degrees colder here but i don’t notice it.

bekage–
Our S. starts at Tufts in the fall. What seems to be the easiest way to travel between Tufts & LI (bus, train, plain, shared rides)? Amtrak has the express to Penn Station. Not cheap, but convenient to the LIRR.
And hello from another Huntington Station person. Lived there years ago and still have family there :)

You can also take the Chinatown bus from lower Manhattan, only $13 each way. But that’s only good when you don’t have a lot of luggage. Otherwise the Amtrak is the best way, unless you can find a cheap plane ticket.

Never heard of that one before. $13?!

lspf72, the bus is called the “fung wah” bus. it is very cheap, but there have been problems with teh drivers in the past (risky drivers, and minor accidents). however, many people in boston use it, and most do not have problems with it.

I’ve taken the Fung Wah innumerable times. I’ve never had a problem. The only complaint would be that they stop at McDonald’s for a rest stop, and then the whole bus smells like french fries and trans fat for an hour or so. Otherwise, it’s quite efficient and cost-effective.

wow 13 bucks. how long does the ride take and is it a coach bus, or a more uncomfortable schoolbus-type? =P

I know several people, including my daughter, who have been on the Fung Wah buses when they’ve broken down. Also, they have caught fire a couple of times and I think there have been some accidents. A lot of their drivers don’t speak English, I believe, which could be a problem in an accident. Personally, considering their safety issues, I think I would spend the extra $20 or so and go on Greyhound. The train is nice, but somewhat expensive. I think it’s over $100 one way to NYC. My daughter has taken the train, including the Acela, to NYC a couple of times. I’m not sure that it’s much faster than the bus though.

Time:
Fungwah/Greyhound bus (former: $13; latter: $20): 4 hours
Regional Amtrak train (price ranging from $58 to $96): 4 hours
Acela train (price ranging from $96 to $117): 3 1/2 hours

And the Fungwah is a coach bus; just like Greyhound’s.

The Greyhound is NOT 20! there’s a special link on greyhound.com that says something like, “12$ fares online to NYC,” and if you click it, you see that the discount makes a trip to Boston or from Boston to NY 15$. (it used to be 17, then 18, then 20, but I think recently they lowered it to compete with Fung Wah.) But this discount only works if you order the tickets online after having clicked that banner. I personally find it convenient b/c I take the T to South Station, the Greyhound to Port Authority, and then to get home I take a bus from Port Authority, so taking the Fung Wah and then having to go to Port Authority anyway seems counterproductive.

The Greyhound says it takes 4 hours and 20 minutes, for the record, but it’s true they sometimes take less. Pick a time with no traffic, and it’ll be like 3 and a half.

The weather…sucks…

Welcome to New England haha

Snow can be nice sometimes though

As long as you’re smart about it, it’s not too bad. Hat, scarf, gloves, long-johns (you may laugh, but jeans can be really cold without a barrier of some kind). When I’ve got all my gear on, I’m pretty comfy (and I’m from southeast PA, so…whatever that means)

Totally agree about leggings under jeans. Also, the reason I got my really long down coat is because no matter how many sweaters you’re wearing, if you’re just wearing jeans your legs will get cold.

Yeah, apparently we don’t even get winter in the NorthEast anymore so there shouldn’t be too much to worry about…

It’s supposed to be pretty cold next week, so dress warmly. :-)

Bring good boots with good traction on ice.
(This addition was inspired by the sleet we got today. The snow was pretty until the rain set in…)
