Weather

How is the weather in the location of University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign? Is it very snowing very often? How long is the winter?

I’m a freshman at UIUC and the weather during the fall is ok. It rains a lot down there. You don’t have to worry about the winter that much since winter break is on Dec 19 to Jan 19.

Is the rain heavy?

I live in a place that does not snow and I cannot withstand cold weather, so I am very concerned about the coldness of the place.

It will snow during the winter time. The weather down at champaign follows the general trend of the mid-western weather.

i heard the weather sucks dik. im from cali and man its gona be hard for me…

They have these things called coats, gloves, hats and scarves that people wear in the winter. These things keep them, how do you say…warm.

“Is the rain heavy?” Weighs a ton.

If you are used to not having winters then yes you are in for a shock. Most of the dorms are not air conditioned and one reason is that you really only need it , if at all, about the first three weeks of school. September is usually one of the best months of the year in Illinois with temps in the 70s and even 80s most of the month. It starts to cool by the end of Sep and it is then a rather slow progression. By end of October you are usually getting highs in the 50s but still can see a few 60s now and then. There are often all day rains in Oct and even Nov. Sometimes just drizzle, sometimes downpours, but you usually still get a number of sunny days. By end of Nov,you often have your initial sights of snow but usually mostly flurries and still seeing highs in the 40s. December brings the consistent cold and the usual beginning of accumulating snow. We have had “pleasant” Decembers, highs staying in upper 30s with little snow, and the “unpleasant” ones, starts in the 30s, snows every other day and by Christmas you are below zero and already have 40 inches of snow on the ground. December usually begins the end of the sun – when not snowing it is cloudy most everyday except the day after a major snow storm it is usually sunny-- and that continues through February. January is usually brutal, temps consistently below freezing and some years consistenly below 20, and high risk of below zero days and you can sometimes get a 20 day stretch where it never gets above 12 and touches temperatures that only polar bears can like, and we have had years where you get a string of many days where the lows are well below zero. Major blizzards are a high risk and that contiues through early March. February is usually the most depressing month of the year because it remains cold, cloudy, snowy and any excitement you had when you saw the first snow of the season back in late November or early December has given way to the thought that you never want to see snow again and you wonder constantly why the hell am I living here. March usually starts cold and snow storms can still come but usually you start to get a little relief by the end of the month and temps consistently above freezing start setting in. April “averages” in the 40s to 50s but I have never seen an “average” day in April. You can get 20s, you can get 60s, you can get some snow, you can get lots of rain including thunderstorms, you can get sun … and then in the afternoon … By May you are usually getting some pleasant days and can start to see 60s and even 70s but you can still get many rainy days.

drsuba provided lots of great info.

If you want to get more detail go to the weather underground web site ([Welcome to Weather Underground : Weather Underground](http://www.wunderground.com)) and input Champaign or Urbana as the location. There are pages of historical data (by day, by week, by month).

Wow, I’m so glad I found this forum. I’ve been dying to find out about the weather in Champaign-Urbana. I fell in love with the school last year while I was searching for undergrad engineering programs. I’m from California also and I’m absolutely terrified of cold weather. (Anything below 63 degrees scares me). So it’s good to know that for most of the winter season I would be back home. I think I could suck it up for the months after the break. I applied to UIUC last month for regular decision, :]. I can’t wait for admission decisions to come out.
