i just started to think about packing so i was wondering if someone could tell me what the weather is like and what kind of clothes to pack. i am from upstate new york and am accustomed to long cold winters. when does it ever get cold and how cold does it get? does it get cold at night? will i need a lot of jeans and sweatshirts? is there anything you guys recommend packing? thanks!

i live in the mountains in nc so the weather ought to be a little hotter in the summer and not quite as cold in the winter as where i’m from, but it ought to be about the same. you’ll probably want an overcoat (or whatever the female equivalent is if you’re a girl) for the colder months but it won’t be as bad as new york winters.

And I’d say you’ll definitely want a lot of jeans. I think I wore jeans almost every day from mid to late September until around the beginning of April. I use sweatshirts and hoodies a lot, too, because the weather can be cold in the morning and at night, but then get much warmer during the heat of the day, and so I’ll wear a T-shirt underneath the sweatshirt and then take the sweatshirt off if it gets too hot. As for the winter temperatures, I would say that the average temperature from about November until the beginning or middle of March is usually between freezing and forty degrees. It can certainly get much colder (I live about an hour and a half southeast of Winston, and I remember one time that it got down to 7 degrees, and temperatures at home are usually very similar to temperatures in Winston, but that was the coldest temperature in like eighty years. I think you’ll be fine with one relatively heavy jacket, a bunch of jeans, and a bunch of sweatshirts.

40 degrees in the heart of winter? I am psyched. Not even close to that warm where I’m from.

I’d say the weather is even a bit better than that.

According to weather.com, the average highs for Winston-Salem in December, January, and February are 51, 47, and 52 degrees respectively.

You’ll definately want a coat on those days because the morning and the evening will be far chillier (average lows are 28, 25, and 27 degrees for those same three months).
