Son has had 3 programming classes, C++, Basic, Java and has been learning C sharp on his own, so he’s not a novice programmer and has been doing tech support for a couple of years. Web design, however, would really open up some new opportunities. I’m open to any suggestions.

I use the “lesser” products, just because they were cheap or free and easy. iWeb for the Mac. WordPress, GoogleSites (which I don’t like as well but maybe that’s because I haven’t taken enough time with it). I use these to design/maintain websites for a couple of local non-profits. I’m definitely an amateur, but they are hard up :).

DreamWeaver, in my understanding, is the way to go. Someone has offered to provide it to one of the non-profits for me to use… so I cannot imagine that he cannot use it to create as many websites as he wants (for himself or others). That’s how all of the ones I use work.

ETA: I see upon re-reading that you are wondering if the student version is more limiting than the full version. Sorry, I don’t know about that.

Kathie, as a web designer, he’ll love dreamweaver. Definitely get it for him. I would think he should be able to use the student version for whatever he wants. I have an older version… I’d love to upgrade at some point but I think I’d have to buy the whole new program instead of the upgrade version since mine is so old. If I could make a suggestion, you might want to buy him a book on PHP to go along with it. If he knows C++ it’s very similar but more web oriented.

fendergirl, Look at this sentence on the product description -
Does this mean that he cannot use it to build multiple websites, i.e. websites for other people? I was ready to pull the trigger, but the whole point is for him to be able to use it for that.

a license is just basically the registration of the software on a computer meaning the product registration code that you enter when you install it (it comes along with the software.) meaning he can only purchase one copy of it per year… can’t buy five copies for five computers. nothing to do with how many websites he makes or who they are for.
