Every now & again a website with lots of visuals and accompanying music will leave the music playing when I have closed the site. Is there any way to find this and turn off the music without shutting down the computer to reset everything?

If you are running on Windows, use Task Manager (ctrl-alt-del) to look for the active process and end it.

How would you determine the name of the process? Since I keep many different browsers & tabs open, it is tough to tell which one is producing audio, esp since i have closed the tab or window of the site which was musical. It is usually some sort of ‘show’ style site, pretty photos with music and it seems like they site does not close the music section when it closes.

I had it happen repeatedly on a realty site with a bubbling brook noise which turned me into a babbling idiot until I did a full system restart ;)

You can look for processes using CPU cycles by clicking on the “CPU” button at the top of the Task Manager window. That should help locate which is the offending process. If you have to do a full shut down to get rid of it, I guess the sounds are played by Windows Media Player (or other default sound file player) rather than a browser plug-in. You can look for those in your process list.

Thanks Mrs Weasley, I will check that next time! I knew to go to the task mgr, but did not know which to look for since the browser appeared to be inactive
