Websters Dictionary

Sorry the title should have been Websters Dictionary vs. Oxford? Which one?

The most recent edition of the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary is the one most often used for editors in general publishing. (11th ed. is the current one; Amazon has it for $10.66.)

The Oxford English Dictionary has several versions, multiple volumes in a huge set, three-volume set, one-volume abridged version. The O.E.D. gives the history of the word and when it was first used. Also British in orientation. I think you want the Merriam-Webster for most uses. And don't just grab anything that says Webster's; lots of dictionaries have that in the title.

I love dictionaries (English major, former librarian and editor).
