Wedding attire help for someone without a clue

I’m going to my niece’s wedding in Malibu at the end of February next year. I’m the opposite of a stylish dresser and I don’t remember the last time I wore an actual dress. I’d really prefer some type of pants outfit but I’m having trouble knowing what’s suitable. The dress code is “cocktail plus”, whatever that means. My sister (the MOB) is wearing a long dress but I’d rather not – it’s just not me. I know I’ve seen some nice flowy pant outfits online before but I don’t know the right places to look.

You guys always have the greatest suggestions on these clothing threads so I’m hoping to get some ideas from you all. I’m fairly short (5’4") and a bit overweight. I’ve got a tummy but thin legs. I’m not afraid of sparkles or color but I’m 68, so don’t go crazy! Something with a little jacket would be great.

Thanks for your help!

Macy’s has some ideas under ‘cocktail pants’

Try Nordstrom. For everything!

@twoinanddone , that is a gorgeous pantsuit. It’s got great reviews. Shiny heels and some jewelry and you have it!

Comes in different colors.

Dillard’s has a ton: https://www.dillards.com/c/womens-dresses-pant-sets

I like all of those first 3 but those knee-length jackets look terrible on me because I’m short. I prefer a shorter jacket like the one in post $ 5 but I’m not crazy about the look of the pants.

If you have a David’s Bridal near you, I would go and check out the options. They emerged from bankruptcy, but not sure how many stores are still around.

OP, search the Nordstrom’s site for “jumpsuit.” So. Many. Cute. Options! You can add your own jacket if one is not provided.

Suggestion to OP - what’s considered acceptable much less fashionable varies hugely by region. Before making a decision, get some advice from any family you have in that region and from posters who live or regularly travel to that region. There have been some suggestions on the various “fashion” or “what to wear” threads where someone suggests something that’s considered normal and classy for their area but would be borderline laughable or out of touch for another region. Location matters.

The wedding is in Malibu. I know there are a lot of CA folks here.

Patsmom, there is a store in Ft Lauderdale that specializes in special clothes. While they make to,order, they also have many ready made that are reasonable. My nurse wants to marry in a pants outfit, so I sent her the link. Look for bridal shops to find link.

PS, I wore a pants outfit to son’s wedding.

I really don’t think an auntie needs to buy any bridal shop horror for a winter Malibu wedding. Just get something you like and will wear again.

Can you describe the type of venue? Would you wear black on the bottom? If yes I’d concentrate on finding a top that you like. Do you see yourself in those type of flowy pants? I’m 5 ft 5 1/2 and that type of pant doesn’t always look good on me. Can you go to a store and try on a few things to decide what style looks good on you.
If you’d consider a dress look at Komorov dresses on Nordstrom. My sister who is not a big dress person found several she loved for my D’s wedding.
I’d alao be leery of websites that are companies in China. You don’t always get what you order.

@patsmom

What is the venue? Is it a fancy indoor ballroom place or is it an outdoor venue? Evening or some other time of day?

The MOB usually gets a little more dressed up than other guests. I wore a long dress to DDs wedding, but the other guests certainly didn’t wear gowns. They wore nice dresses or slacks outfits. Lots of choices.

@thumper1 , I like that one with the “cape” look. I agree what’s the venue and time of day for the event. What colors do you like?

I’m not sure about the venue. I need to ask my sister. I know it’s at 5:30 PM, though. I’ll find out.

I’d be happy to wear black pants and some kind of sparkly top. I don’t mind flowy as long as they aren’t really wide. No preferences about color. I like 'em all!

I live in Southern California. The venue makes a big difference. Especially in February. It can be 80 degrees or 50 degrees. Last year I went to a wedding in February and the venue was indoor/outdoor and absolutely FREEZING! That is not typical, but can happen.
