Wedding Bells!

Dear friends of ours camped out at our County Courthouse beginning at 5:30 this morning to be first in line to obtain a marriage license. Theirs is a marriage that only became permissible in our State beginning Friday afternoon. DW and I came by about 7:30 to support our friends. By the time the Clerk’s Office opened at 8:00 a.m. there were twenty or so couples in line, together with many more supportive family and friends. It was a surreal scene. We live in a VERY conservative area, but there were no protests and the County employees were extremely supportive, ringing a bell with each new license and giving roses to every couple.

I cherish my wife, my marriage, and my family. DW and I have been married 28 years, and I sometimes think about how our marriage would have been illegal in this State until 1963, and it wasn’t until Loving v. Virginia, in 1967, that marriages such as ours were legal throughout the Country. I’m glad that Jamie and Patrice are officially married now too. Please join me in wishing them the best!

No politics please.

Best wishes to your friends, Sherpa! Our state changed in this regard just last summer, and it has been so exciting to see long time couples we know getting married over the past few months. If your state can do it, it gives me hope that all of them can!

Congrats to all who got married today it your state! Hopefully, in the not to distant future, people in all 50 states will have the same right to get married.

Yes, vicarious congrats to your friends! I love seeing the dominoes of inequality fall.

Best wishes and a lifetime of happiness to Jamie, Patrice, and all the couples!

My grandparents could not marry when they first moved to America (nor in the previous country). That was not that long ago and it would be almost unspeakable today. My greatest wish is that my grandchildren have the same sentiments about marriage equality in two generations as my generation has about interracial marriage today.

Warms my heart to hear stories like this. :)

sherpa.
Wonderful news! Congrats to your friends!

Congrats to your friends!!! Such a wonderful thing to be a witness to.

How wonderful! What a fantastic surprise Christmas present to Jamie and Patrice, and all the other couples who have been waiting so long to be able to marry.

I love that you and others went out to support them - the ultimate gift.

Congrats to your friends. Wish all couples everywhere could do the same.

I saw the title of the thread and thought one of your kids was getting married!! This is great regardless. Congrats to your friends and on your state beating my state to the punch. Was it at least above 0 deg outside?

Mazel Tov to your friends! May the joy of marriage for all people spread to all states very soon.

Congrats to your friends! It’s been legal here for a year-my H and I feel as you do, since we too, would not have been allowed to marry prior to Loving if we were in certain parts of the country. I love seeing the dominoes fall.

Lovely, lovely, lovely! And just in time for Xmas. There will be no forgetting the anniversary date for them!

Beautiful! Blessings on you and your newly married friends!

Such wonderful news! I have been so happy that my state finally joined the party this year. Hopefully, all 50 soon!

So glad you shared this good news with us. Happy news is always welcome.

What would Phil Robertson say? :)

^ Who cares?

Congrats to your friends and all the happy couples. Looking forward to the day when this is no longer news worth telling the rest of the world about and simply “routine”.
