With DS’s wedding coming up in just over a month, I’m wondering what songs would be on your “must play” reception playlist. And what songs would be on your “do not play under any circumstances” list?

“Do not play” (way overplayed for the last 50 years)

Celebration
Sunrise Sunset

We are in the midst of wedding planning and D1 is in that age group where she has been attending lots of weddings this past year. She says lots of Michael Buble/Frank Sinatra/Harry Connick, Jr. type songs are popular. For those with country taste she said Rascal Flatts and Keith Urban are usually on the lists. At Last by Etta James is usually overplayed. Here is a list someone sent us of popular fast songs for dancing:

•Love Shack by the B-52s
•Friday I’m in Love by The Cure
•You Spin Me Right Round by Dead or Alive
•Groove Is in the Heart by Dee Lite
•Shout by The Isley Brothers
•The Way You Make Me Feel by Michael Jackson
•Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough by Michael Jackson
•Canned Heat by Jamiroquai
•Get Down Tonight by KC and the Sunshine Band
•Hey Ya! by Outkast
•Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen
•Love Rollercoaster by the Red Hot Chili Peppers

Lady Gaga’s Let’s Dance was a big hit to get everyone on the dance floor at the latest wedding.

She has a ton more but those are what I remember and had access to right now. On her do not play list is The Chicken Dance and Baby Got Back!

Do not play: Macarena, Hot Hot Hot, Superfreak, or YMCA, all of which we seem to hear at every function we go to. The last one is amusing, though, since most people have no idea what the song is really about.

Back in the day, my H put together our reception music, taping from records to a reel to reel tape recorder (really). He put together lots of our favorite music (a lot of rockabilly and New Wavish stuff), but I balked when he was about to add Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark’s song “Enola Gay.” He couldn’t understand why it just didn’t seem appropriate for a wedding…great song, but not exactly celebratory.

Proud Mary is the one I always hear at weddings but it doesn’t bother me as much as Celebration.

Consider the song lyric content, which people know in their minds. For example, when choosing something from The Stones, nix on “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction.”

At the last wedding I attended, “Love Story” by Taylor Swift went over very well. The pop remix (the one on the stations that aren’t country stations) is pretty fun to dance to, actually, although not traditional. I think “I Gotta Feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas would also set the tone.

College fight songs seem to be big these days…

I agree about YMCA and Celebration. Gets the drunk old people out on the dance floor, though!

Husband and I love the Stones, but are there any songs with acceptable lyrics? Especially the older ones?

YMCA, Electric Slide, Celebration, Macarena, I don’t love any of them, but I think it’s sort of fun to have them and watch. People really like having a set of prescribed moves.

Thought I already posted this but…

Chris Brown “Forever” the song from the famous Wedding entrance last year…

D1 is planning an October 2011 wedding and has found that her fiance is, as expected, not intensely interested in most wedding details. Except the playlist! I tried to engage him in conversation about the wedding lately, and he was polite - but once the subject of the playlist came up, he snapped to and I could tell that he’s already given this a lot of thought. He knows what the last hour of music is going to be in detail (perhaps I’ll have returned to the hotel by then :D).

Two of my 5 Ds are married and at both weddings, the couple chose the playlist for the reception in conjunction with the DJ. If you get a good DJ, they will be of great assistance in not only making sure that the bride and groom have their favorite music played but also be able to provide input into what works best in getting people up to dance.

Wedding dance staples around here:
I Gotta Feeling
Love Shack
Can’t Touch This
Cha-Cha Slide
Mony Mony
Tequila
Ice Ice Baby

Paul Simon “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover”

Writing a Letter by the Smokin Popes

Oh, I think everyone under the age of 70 knows what YMCA is really about – they just don’t care because it gets them moving!

I must be too into country music. I am not familiar with many of the songs mentioned here…(except YMCA- isn’t that the nice song about the Christian organization? )

Well, now they have to get rid of the song anyway (YMCA) since they are officially adopting their name as the “Y” - no more mca or wca. :)

I fondly recall stopping the band from playing New York, New York at my wedding. I hate that song.
