Two years ago, I got the prongs for my main diamond redone and then had all the small diamonds reset. A month later, we were on a cruise. I went up onstage in the theater for a Super Bowl contest. I was winning a bag toss game when I realized my diamond had fallen out!!! The ship was great and helped me look for it, but we never found it.
I went to the jewelry store that had done the repair and said, “Look, I don’t know if you can do anything to help me, but the diamond fell out a month after you had repaired the prongs…” They replaced the diamond for me at no cost! I don’t know much about diamond quality, but this one seems shinier.
They did stipulate that I should get the ring insured, so I’ve done that. I didn’t insure it before because I never take it off. I didn’t think about the diamond falling out.
I agree that it’s important for the prongs on rings to be inspected but had never heard of the BAND wearing out before. My band is pretty narrow on the engagement ring but to my eye, can’t really see much difference in thickness between the front of the band and the back of it. Both seem to be about the same as when I got the ring over 30 years ago.
We have had the jeweler look over the diamond periodically and he did adjust it at least once. So far, it has never given me trouble and kept the diamond secure, knock wood!

Might depend on the content of the band. For example, higher gold content is softer. I have the wedding ring of one of my grandmothers and it is definitely much thinner on the inside part of the ring. Back in the day, I know gold counts were often higher, 18K vs 14k for example. Platinum on the other hand is supposedly stronger than gold.
