I ordered the dress from kohls that @abasket linked
Just received it. It’s so cute! I haven’t tried it on yet but it’s a cute silky fabric, a nice bright pink.
Now I’m in a conundrum lol! I was going to keep the 2 dresses from Anthropologie. I loved both the farm Rio maxi and the Somerset maxi. If nothing else, they are cute dresses and I would wear both on a tropical vacation for dinners. I think I could wear one for the rehearsal and one for the wedding.
But now, if this fits the way I think it will, I should send one of the other dresses back. The Somerset seems like the logical choice. But I really liked that dress.
That’s true. I’m not much of a maxi dress wearer. I’m more of a short dress or skort wearer. There is no reason I can’t find places to wear it. Dress is so casual anymore.
I tried the dress on. The dress from Anthropologie is more flattering. It’s cut better in the arms and the waist lays and fits better. It’s more comfortable.
If I hadn’t tried the other dress on and had that dress to compare to, I would probably really like the dress from Kohl’s. I think it’s a very nice dress. I bought it for less than $50.
So my sister in law says I need to get with the times and order a bunch of dresses online, try them on, and send back the ones I don’t like. Ugh. That sounds like a nightmare to me. I don’t even know what size I am at this point. Does anyone go to stores and try dresses on anymore?
That’s a good idea. I like Talbot’s. Maybe I would find something I actually like! I used to have a lot of luck at Dress Barn, but it’s no more. Every store I like seems to close.
I’m sure some do, but it’s a big nope from me. I’d much prefer to order three or four dresses from Nordstrom, Macy’s, even Amazon, then send back whatever doesn’t work and try again if necessary. It’s easy to print out a return label and hand off the package at a UPS drop point or even wait for a pick up from my house.
One method I have found to be effective is to order several dresses online to be picked up at the store. Stores often now carry only a limited inventory so even if you go, there’s no guarantee you will find things in your size. This way, you can pick up, try on, and then easily return right while you are there. I did this last year for a Black Tie wedding. I too had no idea of what my size was, so I ordered one dress in three different sizes, and then also a couple of others. It was so nice to know that when I got there, at least there would be some things to try on and that it wouldn’t be a totally wasted trip!
I was highly disappointed when I went in person to stores looking for a dress for my daughters wedding- hadn’t been in a dept store in ages and let me tell you, it wasn’t pretty. Terrible selection, unorganized, small selection of sizes, etc
While I did end up finding one at Dillards in the third city area I shopped, I understand why people don’t shop in person anymore.
Do you know what size pants you wear? Might a dress be similar??
For recent MOB for D2- I ordered shoes on line (Nordstrom’s and Dillards) and returned them all.
Then, I went dress shopping with D1 while in Seattle and was very frustrated in Nordstrom’s, but I was lucky in Macy’s. I then got home and went into the only ‘fancy’ store in town- Dillards and found shoes.
It’s hard to shop when you have a particular event.
I’m a petite when it comes to dresses. Most stores have either completely eliminated petite sections or have a very small selection. When I was shopping for a MOB dress for my daughter’s wedding last year, it was much easier to shop online as the selection was so much better. Nordstrom has free returns with no deadline so I could keep possibilities while I continued to look. Nordstrom also allows returns at Nordstrom Rack (our local Nordstrom closed but we still have The Rack here).
Shopping online meant I could shop at more convenient times rather than constantly go from store to store hoping to find something in the limited in stock selection that I liked and was the correct size. It was easy to return the online orders as the brick and mortar store is in a shopping center where I also grocery shop.
Honestly with my work schedule I just liked the convenience of shopping from home after work and not using my days off to go from store to store constantly taking clothes on and off.
Selection is much better online. But… going in person allows you to better understand brands/sizing. Sometimes it works to do a combination of both, taking advantage of in-store return method.
Portland, ME does not seem to have many clothing stores. I don’t know how far you are from Burlington Mall, Burlington MA. It has a lot of clothing stores including Nordstrom, Anthropologie, Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, etc.
If you could make a day trip, the Wrentham Outlet, in Wrentham, MA, is a fun place to go shopping for clothes. There is a Talbot’s there, too.
Agree - if you don’t do a bunch of dress shopping on the regular, trying some on in-person first (at Talbots or elsewhere) will really help.
I also find it hard to order online if I don’t know exactly what I’m looking for and have a precise understanding of my size in the manufacturer’s clothing. The choices are overwhelming.
You got it! I’m sure a few in-person try-ons will help set the stage and you’ll be fine!
Website says this:
semi-formal: … mid- or floor-length dresses are most appropriate.
… we suggest choosing clothing in spring tones, avoiding neon colors.
My problem?
“ semi-formal “ is less dressy than cocktail if I google it.
her descriptive words are more like formal.
black is worn because it is flattering! (And dressier)
Can I wear this? (Flattering, but worry about the color being dark!) (in June, … will need a shrug).
