I don’t know if this is the norm everywhere, but my Wegmans is starting personal shopping next week. I’m so excited because I can then limit my impulse purchases (although I still plan to peruse the bakery section). A couple of the cool features are that when you pull up to get your groceries, you can pay right from your car with your card, and you can scan the barcodes of items at home to include in the shopping list.
Thank you for posting this! I have a Wegmans ten minutes from my house and never go there…not because I think it is a bad store, I just have other choices that have become my go-tos for groceries. I have bouts of sciatica where walking any distance can be tough and if my local store is offering this service I will definitely use it.
I love Wegman’s! My dd introduced the store to me when she was in school in NY.
We don’t have those in California! We do have grocery delivery but not with the extras that Wegman’s has.
We don’t have a Wegman’s but the biggest chain in my area (Price Chopper) has had personal shopping for several years. They also will either deliver to your home or you can go pick your groceries up. There are dedicated parking spots with machine like in a drive thru to tell store you are there for pick up. Then they bring your bags out and load them.
I see lots of the shoppers when I go. They carry hand held device with the customer’s order.
Our local chain does the same as emilybee describes.
It’s not about the personal shopping, it’s about the fact that it’s WEGMANS!!!
I lived in Syracuse when I was in high school and again in my late 20’s to early 30’s and Wegman’s was the market there even then (late '60’s/early 70’s and then mid 80’s-early '90’s) and my inlaws still live there so I still go to Wegman’s every so often. I don’t get all the fawning it gets. Their stores are way too big - takes forever to shop and I find their stores dark. Maybe because Wegman’s for me was never a big deal as they were ubiquitous in upstate NY going back 40+ years.
Wegman’s is our favorite store now. My DH (who does most of the cooking) looks at it as a field trip!
I think that would be a fun job for someone retired but active and able. Gathering someone else’s grocery requests but not having to pay for it or drag it home! I’d do it!
A Wegman’s is being built right across the street from where I live. I can’t wait for it to open. Their bakery and buffet bar I can’t resist. The nearest one currently is about 20 miles away.
In high school I delivered groceries to the elderly in a wagon that I pulled along the sidewalk. For large orders, the owner would drive me to the house. Back then a store knew what each customer usually ordered and would call them ahead of time. I would love to have a Wegmans in our town, but we are too small. The store in Ithaca, NY offers a Saturday morning cooking class for children.
We are getting one in Brooklyn soon and I am really looking forward to it! We do have Instacart where shoppers pick what you want from Whole Foods, Target, Fairway, Costco–a real help for New Yorkers without cars. But my budget is low and I pick my own stuff!
Freshdirect and Peapods do online shopping and delivery. I decided to go to a local grocery today to pick up few items and it was closed! I avoid going to a grocery store as much as possible.
I find Wegmans much cheaper than other supermarkets. We initially started shopping there when all three kids lived at home and we saved over $60 per week on the same grocery list we used in Shoprite and Pathmark.
