For D, it was a female teacher and D is of course female. It was just so shocking to D and made her feel picked on, when she was already having trouble being a new transfer student at a new school. I think the teacher was simply clueless and didn’t MEAN to be unkind. It was just odd, since so many of the other girls and boys in the class were also 5% height and weight but only D was singled out. Maybe because she was new? Still rankles after all these decades.
What would you do if you worked with a young professional woman who was obviously anorexic, and obviously getting sicker and sicker by the minute? What would you do if you were in management in a medium-sized company with this situation?
Assume her work was exemplary in every way, and assume a few of her colleagues had spoken to her and she had claimed she was just naturally thin.
" What a sexy sexy little dog! "
Okay , that made me laugh…what the heck is a sexy dog ?
@HImom Your daughter’s teacher seems to have aired her comments publicly (so so wrong) and also most of us can tell when a comment, privately, is made out of genuine concern or out of some other less genuine motivation. My guess is your daughter wasn’t feel any genuine concern nor was the questioning handled in a private, caring manner.
The teacher had several other very questionable conversations. She talked about a news story where a person was gunned down and murdered in her workplace. She asked the 7-8 year old kids in the class to stand and UD themselves if they were victims of domestic violence and then called out individual kids and asked them in front of the clas if they were victims??? It was very upsetting to nearly everyone–inappropriate venue and upsetting to all these kids.
This teacher was/is young but that’s not really a good reason. I’m a great fan of teachers but don’t think all of them keep the setting and context clearly in mind.
I hope that society is getting better about it. When I was in high school they weighed us the first day of PE and then they told us what our weight/height should be. We were weighed every week for the whole year. It was not a good thing for the girls at all. When my sons were in elementary school they were weighed in certain grades(I can’t remember which ones) and a note was sent home letting us know whether they were in the “normal” range which I thought was intrusive. My oldest who is in college now was also weighed in High school once in PE for the same reason. However I think enough parents complained because they did not do that with the 11th or 9th grader. I am hoping they aren’t doing it in elementary school anymore either.
I can’t imagine why anyone would comment about someone’s pet’s weight… I also don’t know why anyone would call a dog sexy. I’m thinking they aren’t thinking when they are talking.
Lisa Vanderpump is one of the stars of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. (Bravo). She is an animal lover…and, for that is, I suspect, her way of not asking the sex of the dog…like…hi buddy you are such a cute dog. She owns several restaurants here, in London she and her husband owned and operated some nightclubs, I believe. No insult…like "MY dog is a boy!!! I am insulted!
BravoTV is a major reality show network.
I love the fact pizzagirl that you have no idea who Lisa Vanderpump is!
Hangs head in shame! As a regular watcher of the RHWBV!
Ellebud, I can hear Lisa Vanderpump saying that! No insult at all!
Lisa V is almost never without her dog, and probably loves dogs more than or at least as much as people. I’m not a follower of either of her shows, but she shows up a lot on various TV shows. Now that PG is retired, she’ll probably see her on TV.
Bevhills, does she wear much makeup IRL?

We were faced with a situation when our youngest was a baby and we had an anorexic nanny. She was a friend of a friend and our mutual friend suggested her for various reasons. She moved from Washington State to our home in NJ and lived with us for 3 months. She was fantastic at taking care of our child in the four hours I had to work a day back then…but she took a turn for the worse with her eating disorder and although we tried to urge her to get help, it wasn’t until I told her that I feared for our child’s safety that she finally took it seriously and agreed to go to our local hospital that our mutual friend worked at…and just in the nick of time as it turned out.
It put us in a bad place in terms of child care , but it got her on the path to recovery
Lisa (we’re besties now) looks lovely IRL. Yes, she wears makeup and she is very put together. The makeup doesn’t “crack”. I don’t wear a lot of makeup IRL, but if I am going out I match. The Vanderpumps evidently have a lot of animals: golden retreivers, small horses, swans and Giggi.
I had a teacher in second grade, a man, who told us (the girls) the glory of non fat milk. There were two girls in the class, both of them had no fathers, would kiss him good bye every day. He was a legend as a horrible teacher. And, at a time where teachers weren’t fired, he was.

This seems to be a situation for HR to handle not colleagues directly. Even if they are speaking out of concern, its possible it could be some other health related issue. Eating disorders are health issues and, as such, are better not addressed by coworkers. I think if I was concerned about a coworker I would mention it to HR and let them determine if they could/should address it. My guess is that legally, unless it puts others at risk or effects an employee’s ability to do their job, there probably isn’t much that can be done.
Wait, I thought this thread was about strangers commenting on our dogs’ weight. Am I going crazy?
Eh, dogs, people… What’s the difference? Except, of course, that my dog has never expressed an interest in taking the SAT, learning to drive, or going to college, bless his little heart!
Can you imagine how pissed off dogs must get when they are put on a diet? At least for us humans it is a conscious decision however painful it might be to live through.
Well, if anyone ever asked me when my pet is “due,” it wouldn’t bother her one iota. Can’t say the same for women who aren’t pregnant but who get asked that question!
No, you aren’t going batty! Dogs…children…grandmas…I think that this evolved into a very interesting thread.
I’ve never heard of Lisa! I can’t imagine referring to a dog as sexy, either.
I have a large dog. He’s a little overweight but mainly just big. He weighs 125. People do comment. I don’t think he feels shamed!
I’ve never heard of Lisa either.
dos, I burst out laughing at your last comment but it also reminded me of something that contradicts what I said earlier.
My sister has a pug. She doesn’t overeat and they walk several miles every day. The pug is obese. Not a little chubby but obese. Vet has no idea why and she’s otherwise very healthy.
Anyway, one day my sister came home and found a bag of diet dog food on her porch. I don’t think I’ve ever seen my sister angrier. That was several years ago now and she’s still angry about it. (Never found out who it was and I pity that soul if she ever does.)
So almost everyone around here minds their own business with regards to pet weight…
Add me to the list of people who had no idea who Lisa Vanderpump was .
As for the adorable, ADORABLE little doggie (admitting bias here as we had one - miss him Soo much). My DS used to walk him - we referred to the dog as a “babe magnet”.
