Weight loss drug thread for usage advice (not debating)

I don’t think so. It’s been fine the past week. I didn’t sleep well last night, but that was because I was so furious at our middle son - our conversation with him yesterday did not go well. :frowning:

I got Mounjaro because of my cardiac history, a 7.8 a1c (first time it had ever gone over 7 – had been in the 6 range for many years) and my BMI was way up. My H is on Ozempic plus Jardiance and is still over 7 – but he eats like cr*p. Has lost about 15 lbs. We both have family history of diabetes, too.

My hair has fallen out as well. Had let it grown out and I liked the way it looked for once, but since I started Mounjaro it’s so sparse now that I’m ready to cut it off. Had the same issue with a couple of my chemo drugs over the years. My hair is really sensitive to drugs and hormones – it was thin when I had PCOS, too.

My primary enthusiastically recommended going on Mounjaro. I hadn’t even asked. Once the a1c went over the magic number he was all over it.

I had spoken to my primary care physician about assistance with weight loss. She wanted me to “try on my own” first, which I did, and gained weight, like I reliably do. After a year, she gave me a referral to the weight loss area of the health care system. At that point I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic.

I meet regularly (more frequently at first, now quarterly) with both a nutritionist and a physician. First they assessed if I would be a good candidate for a weight loss drug, then I had to work with my insurance to see if it would be covered. I have hypothyroidism, and that was one of the conditions it was approved for, so it is covered.

When I initially met with diabetes education, I told them I was so tired of feeling and being told that my weight was due to a lack of self-control. It’s important to remember that not everyone’s body works the same - weight issues may be due to thyroid, diabetes, cancer, orthopedic issues - not necessarily because we’re all sitting on our rear ends eating boxes of chocolates and donuts. My “coach” reminded me that it’s not my fault my pancreas aren’t cooperating with the rest of my body. No willpower is going to fix that. I am really glad so many of you have had success with these new drugs - I wish I was one of them!

I’ve had insomnia for decades, I think my body is just messed up after 25 years of night shift. But my only side effects of Zepbound is worse sleep for 3 nights after the med and cold intolerance. I even wear a battery operated heated vest indoors..

Has anyone dealt with insomnia on a GLP-1? I’m on zepbound. I took 2.5 mg for 4 weeks with almost no side effects. On Sunday I went up to 5 mg and have had terrible insomnia all week. If you have had insomnia, how long did it last after the shot? I’m going back down to 2.5 mg this Sunday since it was working for me, but I want to know when I’ll be able to sleep. Argh.

That’s interesting…I’ve had insomnia since January 2024, just after we came back from a west coast trip to see S1. Have attributed the change in time zone and getting stuck in that rut (I’m a nightowl anyway), but that is also when I started Mounjaro. Need to do some reading and ask my PCP if he has heard similar complaints.

I frequent a mounjaro/zepbound FB support group and insomnia is often mentioned. I’ve been using it since Oct 2022 and my sleep is terrible for about 4 days after each dose.

Yeah, that’s a hard pass from me. lol I went back down to 2.5 mg. I’m hoping I can continue to slowly lose weight on it.

no insomnia for me and I’ve been on it for nearly a year. I think it’s a case by case basis, depends on the person.

Quick question, I’m on week 2 of semaglutide, first injection no side effects, last night and today are rough, headache, backache, nausea… I tend to be that person who actually gets the side effects of medication (gave upon psoriatic arthritis meds). Normal?

I’ve only experienced gastrointestinal side effects from Wegovy, so not sure if that’s a normal reaction.

Nausea was normal for me for at least a few weeks in the beginning, then it faded away. I am a chronic headache sufferer, so unsure if it’s any better or worse, just still very present. No backaches outside the norm for me.

I’ve been lucky with almost no nausea. I sometimes get a headache and/or am tired the day after shot day.

I’ve followed this thread since it was started and today got my prescription for Zepbound (we’ll see if it actaully gets filled or not).

I had labs done in September that were the same as they always are. Nothing in the “danger” category yet, but everything on the “we should watch this” line. A1C just below pre diabetic, cholesterol in the watch category, and triglycerides high but not alarmingly so. Plus, I’m about 40+ lbs overweight (at only 5’2").

In January I went vegan (for not health reasons), started lifting heavy to age well, continued to walk 10k a day, and got serious about tracking my calorie, protein and fiber intake.

It did nothing. No change in labs and no change in weight. A few weeks ago, my brother, who does not do what he needs to do to control his T2 diabetes, had to get 5 toes amputated. It was my wake-up call. I called my doc, laid out everything I was doing, retook my labs and told her I needed help because I felt like every day I woke up thinking “is today the day I become diabetic”. (My dad was T2 and my sister, a primary care physician, was just diagnosed). I thought it would be a fight because she was a bit dismissive at my annual physical. However, she was in agreement that this should be my next step.

I did insist that she set me up with a dietitian. I’ve have worked really hard to come up with an eating plan where I get 120g of protein, 35+g of fiber and less than 40 grams of fat. It usually comes in at around 1500. I upped it from 1200 because it wasn’t sustainable. and I needed the extra protein due to weight training. I use an app from my insurance company, and my planned meals usually have a score of 90-94/100. The problem is all the “extras” that I shove in my mouth without even thinking. I’m hoping I can now stick to my planned meals and that I don’t sacrifice nutrition as I cut calories. It will be interesting to hear what the dietitian has to say.

Also, just some questions.

Do people track what they are eating, or do you find with decreased appetite it’s not necessary?

Has fatigue or neusea affected your workouts?

What habits did you build into your day that have helped?

I have been on Wegovy since last August and have lost 56 lbs. My weight went from obese to overweight and is now in the normal range.

I’ve worked with a nutritionist to focus on getting enough protein, but have not done any tracking. The combination of decreased appetite and unpleasant side effects if I eat certain foods has been very effective.

I haven’t experienced fatigue or nausea. I’ve increased my physical activity and using weights and trying to build muscle.

I have been on Zepbound since August. Lost 60 pounds so far. I fall between the don’t track, and track everything, camps. I prioritize getting enough protein and fiber, and limiting calories, but I make approximate tallies in my head each day. Don’t weigh everything, but I look at labels assiduously and look up info on foods I don’t know. I err on the side of guessing high, so I don’t under estimate. This works for me. Anything more exacting would trigger anxiety about making a mistake. I haven’t seen a dietician, but I read up on nutritional information extensively.

I lift weights and exercise regularly. This drug has made that so much easier. I’ve always exercised regularly, but the post-menopausal weight gain had caused leg pain that was limiting me. I feel so much more like myself again!

I’m stuck. I started Zepbound in August, and lost a lot of weight through Christmas. From Christmas to late April I lost five more pounds. I’m still about 60 pounds over the upper bounds of where I should be, so it’s not like I don’t still have weight to lose. I’ve upped the dosage recently, but it just doesn’t seem to be working as well as it did in the beginning. I know I need to put more (ok, any) exercise into my routine, but I’m just struggling with that. I’ve got another doctors appointment coming in a month and I’d really like to lose 5-6 pounds over this month. Sigh. Any thoughts for how to get myself motivated? I leave the house around 6:30 to get to work, and get home a little before 5:00. I need to use that time between 5:00 and 6:00 when I typically start making dinner to get some movement in my day, but I’m so tired when I get home that all I want to do is sit. Which is not a great plan.

A couple of ideas

I know this feeling well, but the answer is… just don’t sit!!! If you are planning to use that time to walk, tell yourself you will go for 10 minutes, then you can sit. Hopefully after 10 minutes you’ll feel better and go a bit longer.

I believe I’ve read you take a Metrobus for at least part of your commute? If so, can you get off a stop or two earlier and walk the rest of the way?

Can you walk during lunch? If you have a building with steps in them, walk up and down those especially when it’s 142* outside.

If you’re starting from nothing, plan on just 3 days a week, 20 min. If you can make 2 of them Sat-Sun, then you surely can fit in just 1 workday for 20 min, right? After you make this a habit (4-6 weeks), try adding a 4th day in there. And if you can add in more days from the get go, great. But consider those as bonus days, not that you are “failing” if you aren’t out there every day. As time goes on, try adding a few minutes to your days…
